📢 CALL TO ACTION
We are asking allies who can attend to show up and respectfully urge the City Council to vote NO on Agenda Item #11 and not authorize the 287(g) agreement.
The City’s own agenda states that public comment or input must be allowed before a vote on an agenda item. 20260811_Agenda_CityCouncil.pdf
TALKING POINTS FOR PUBLIC COMMENT
* Vote NO on Agenda Item #11. Do not authorize the 287(g) agreement.
* Ask council members to explain publicly what authority Denham Springs officers would receive under the proposed agreement and what duties they would perform.
* Ask: What will this cost the city and its taxpayers—including training, personnel time, equipment, supervision, liability, and other expenses?
* Ask what safeguards will be implemented to prevent racial profiling or stops based on perceived ethnicity, language, or immigration status.
* Ask how the city will ensure immigrant residents can report crimes, cooperate as witnesses, call police during emergencies, and seek help without fear.
* Ask the city to disclose the full proposed Memorandum of Agreement and give residents an opportunity to review it before authorizing participation.
* Ask council members to explain why Denham Springs needs to participate in the 287(g) Task Force Model and what local public-safety problem this agreement is intended to address.
* Remind officials that public safety depends on trust between residents and local law enforcement.
Please remain peaceful, respectful, and focused on the policy. We want city officials to hear clearly from residents and allies:
DENHAM SPRINGS SHOULD NOT SIGN THIS 287(g) AGREEMENT.
Please share with trusted allies who can attend tonight.
