Veterans on the 48

The camaraderie, community, laughter, memories, and connections we make on our hikes are always the goal; The summits are just a bonus.

This weekend VOT48 hosted our First Responders hike co-sponsored by , a non-profit that provides protective and life-saving equipment to police officers as well as resources to all First Responders who may be dealing with depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, substance abuse disorder, and/or thoughts of su***de.

With rising water crossings due to the warmer weather and melting snow, we decided to pivot from Mt. Carrigain to Mt. Crawford, Stairs, and Resolution. After an early morning start under headlamp, we summited Mt. Crawford but during our push to Mt. Stairs, we found ourselves breaking trail in deteriorating conditions. The loose, melting snow required multiple changes from spikes to snowshoes and created some frustratingly hilarious falls as we struggled to fight gravity throughout the day. However, these poor conditions created for a much slower pace and required us to turn back just below the summit of Mt. Stairs to ensure we had enough time and energy to make it back to the trailhead. Although we did not reach the top of all 3 mountains, our goal of bringing a group of veteran First Responders together for a weekend filled with laughter and connection was achieved. This is and always will be the true summit🇺🇸.

Another great weekend in the books!🇺🇸

To get ahead of the snowstorm, Friday night was spent at the and dinner at the . Saturday morning we stepped off for a winter ascent of Mount Liberty and after the hike we celebrated the ascent at the . Congrats to all our veterans on a successful hike and to all those who checked off a new peak from their list.
Special shout out to Mike and Vinny who joined us for their first VOT48 group hike . This was Mikes first NH48 as well! Welcome to the family 🇺🇸.

VOT48 started the new year off with a duel summit of Mt. Whiteface and Mt. Passaconaway yesterday. Starting at 0530 under headlamp, our team of 9 veterans trekked 11.5 miles through 35mph winds in a -31° windchill together. Despite these cold conditions, it was camaraderie, laughter, stories, support, and a shared experiencing in the White Mountains that helped us accomplish the mission. Cheers to the new year and congratulations to all our veterans who checked off new peaks from their list of 48🇺🇸. We will be back in February to take on Flume and Liberty.

Special shout out to Jenn who completed her NH48 on the summit of Whiteface. Congratulations on an amazing accomplishment and thank you for allowing us to be a part of your journey.

As we get ready to ring in the new year, let’s take a look at what we accomplished together in 2025.

In 2025…

*We organized 22 events comprised of 16 group hikes, a WFA class, the Run to Home Base, Dav5k, a Red Sox game, the AMC 4K banquet, an evening with Ty Gagne, and 2 trail maintenance days.

*Some cool accomplishments ….

We summited 24 peaks in 2025!

We welcomed 35 new veteran participants bringing our total to 184.

We certified 9 more veterans in Wilderness First Aid bringing our total number of certified veterans to 67.

We participated in our 7th annual “Flags on the 48” memorial hike to honor and remember the lives lost on 9/11🇺🇸

*We participated in our 5th “Run to Home Base” to support and raise money and awareness for our fellow veterans suffering from PTSD and TBI. As an organization we raised $5,334 bringing our 5 year total to $30,904.

*We took 18 veterans and their family members to a Red Sox game with ⚾️

*We sent out 2 more of our VOT48 finisher patches to veterans who completed their NH48 bringing our total to 93.

*We participated in our 4th

Thank you to all our veteran participants for adventuring with us, to all our donors who help make each event possible, and to our sponsors for their continued support.

Our first hike of 2026 will be Mt. Whiteface and Mt. Passaconaway on January 3rd. This is a difficult hike that spans 11 miles and gains around 4,000ft in elevation. Proper winter attire/gear is required to participate. For more info and to sign up for this hike, please message us directly.

9 veterans from VOT48 took on Mt. GreyLock yesterday which is the Massachusetts State high point at 3,489ft. At the summit of Greylock is the WW1 Massachusetts’s War Memorial built in 1932 to commemorate the courage, endurance, loyalty and self-sacrifice of all the servicemen and woman from the Commonwealth.🇺🇸

It was amazing day in the mountains with some great people! We would like to congratulate all our veterans on a successful summit and give a special shout out to Steve, Amy, and Pete who joined us for their first VOT48 group hike. Welcome to the family!
