Well, I didn't think we'd miss the commotion, but Barrington's Streetscape has become eerily quiet.
No concrete mixers. No jackhammers. No tradesmen discussing things at a volume normally reserved for airport runways. Just open parking spaces, fresh pavement, and planters standing by, patiently waiting for their floral occupants.
We've been keeping you updated throughout the project, and today the report is simple: it's quiet.
Enjoy it while it lasts.
The next chapter of Streetscape 2026 is about to begin, and soon the landscapers will arrive with trucks, mulch, flowers, shrubs, and enough activity to remind us that "finished" is still a moving target.

For now, though, downtown Barrington is taking a deep breath before the blooms.

Father’s Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June. This year that is June 21st ... it's also the Summer Solstice (the longest day of the year). This special day honors fatherhood and the positive role that fathers and father figures play in the lives of children and families.

I was surprised when they landed this morning. I always thought they were little green men. Turns out, they're normal-sized green men.

One of them appeared outside the store today, apparently dispatched from the home planet to assist with Barrington's Streetscape Project. Being the welcoming ambassador that I am, I gave him a Phillips Men's Wear Studio card. If he's staying for the summer, he's definitely going to need a few custom shirts. Intergalactic travel is hard on a wardrobe.
The good news? The Streetscape Project no longer appears to be 93 million miles from completion. Today they're sandblasting and painting the light poles, and landscaping begins tomorrow.
>
Based on today's extra-terrestrial theme, I'm assuming they're planting sunflowers. After all, if you've traveled all the way from another galaxy, you might as well make the place look nice.
Barrington: improving one light pole, one flower bed, and one alien visitor at a time. 👽🌻🚧

Because explain this to me: who was the first person to look at the ground and think, “Shovels? No. We’re going to power-wash the earth into submission

So the process is basically:
Step 1: Blast the ground with a high-pressure water jet until it becomes a mud milkshake.
Step 2: Immediately follow it with a vacuum so powerful it sounds like it owes money to NASA.
Step 3: Remove soil, rocks, and the will to question engineering decisions.
Step 4: Casually install electrical conduit like you didn’t just liquefy half the county.

And the operator just stands there calmly like:
Yep. Standard procedure. Nothing to see here. Please ignore the fact we’re excavating with a fire hose and a leaf blower on steroids.
Meanwhile traditional digging is over in the corner like:
“I have a shovel… and regrets…”

... Today's winner is ...
Every morning I arrive in downtown Barrington and immediately begin playing our newest game:
"Find the Door to the Store."
It's part scavenger hunt, part obstacle course, and part advanced urban planning seminar.

Today's route involved navigating barricades, construction crews, concrete forms, orange barrels, and what I believe was a temporary canyon. Bonus points if you can reach Phillips Men's Wear Studio without asking a construction worker for directions.
In all seriousness, we understand the complexity of this much-needed Streetscape Project and are amazed by the coordination involved. It seems every day we see another gathering of Village dignitaries directing, inspecting, measuring, discussing, and generally ensuring that progress continues at full speed.

A special tip of the hat to the Village of Barrington Streets Department, Village Manager Scott Anderson, Village President Mike Moran, Deputy Village Manager Marie Hansen, and the many other Village bigwigs who appear daily to supervise the transformation. If enthusiasm alone could pour concrete, this project would already be finished.

Until then, we'll keep the game going.

Level 1: Find parking.
Level 2: Cross the construction zone.
Level 3: Locate the entrance.
Level 4: Purchase a suit.
Complete all four levels and you've earned your official Downtown Barrington Streetscape Survivor Badge.
Thanks for continuing to support all the downtown merchants during construction. We promise there's still a store behind all those orange barrels.

Well, nobody ever said progress would be convenient.

If you're planning a trip to Phillips, think of it less as shopping and more as a mild adventure sport. The Village of Barrington's Streetscape Project is moving along quickly, and while the vision of Village President Mike Moran and the Village Board will be worth it, getting here currently requires skills normally associated with a mountain guide, urban explorer, or determined suit buyer.
Parking locations change daily. Sidewalks appear and disappear. Yesterday's route may be today's archaeological dig.
So, first and foremost, thank you. On behalf of all the merchants in the downtown district, we appreciate every customer who has navigated barricades, orange barrels, construction fencing, and whatever new surprise awaits each morning.
Need help? Text us (847-321-5244)
We'll:
Set merchandise aside for you.
Deliver locally when possible.
Give our best guess on where to park today.
Talk you through the obstacle course.
Or just chat for a minute.
Truth be told, some of these construction days are so quiet we're considering naming the orange safety cones and inviting them to lunch.
