Workers' Memorial Day is not just a moment of reflection; it is a call to action. We pause to honor those we have lost, to grieve alongside the families they left behind, and to remind every elected leader and employer that the safety of working people is not optional and failure to protect them is not acceptable. GREAT NEWS! The Maryland General Assembly has passed legislation extending collective bargaining rights to the vast majority of non-tenure track faculty – including full-time, part-time/adjunct faculty – at Maryland's four-year public universities. The legislation now heads to the Governor's desk.

AFT Maryland President, Kenya Campbell, says, “For years, I have heard from faculty who have been showing up for their students while barely keeping their heads above water and without a seat at the table. We have seen the transformative impact of collective bargaining for community college faculty who have won historic union contracts, and we know we will see that same transformation for these thousands of university faculty in the state.”

AFT Maryland members gathered, among other places, at the No Kings rally in Columbia on Saturday, March 28, 2026. In her remarks to the crowd, AFTMD President Kenya Campbell closed by saying: "As we gather here, we show that there is power in resistance. Here in Maryland and in communities across the country. We must continue to show up at every opportunity to make our voices heard. Our defiance is the power we have; it pumps the brakes on their agenda. As we head into the midterms, we must turn our organizing into action. Check your voter registration. Get your neighbors registered. Show up and vote. Today, we rally and grow our numbers. In the months ahead, we take action."

From today's rally in Columbia, MD. AFT Maryland President Kenya Campbell, saying "The workers I fight for every day are under an endless attack from people who couldn’t care less about the communities they serve and care for *every day* ... Workers are watching their wages stagnate or are being laid off while billionaires and corporations get richer. This is not the world that we want to live in. It is not the world that we have created for our families and our communities." AFT

“Our city workers are the backbone of Baltimore – and this agreement honors that, delivering historic wage increases, stronger protections, and the voice they have always deserved,” said AFT Maryland President Kenya Campbell. “They never stop showing up for this city. They have earned a contract reflective of their commitment.”

A union representing thousands of Baltimore City workers last week voted to ratify a new contract, including salary increases, stronger benefits, and workplace safety improvements.
