πŸŽ‰ Join us celebrating the release of this new episode! This one is special because one of our interns, Mikayla Mariano, worked on the vision and development of this episode. Her goal was to create a series for the SLO Equity podcast centered on the Ethics of DEI. After much work, here's the first episode! πŸ‘πŸ½

➑️ This episode of the SLO Equity Podcast features a much needed conversation between host Mikayla Mariano and Father Ian Delinger, Rector of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in San Luis Obispo and host of Playing with Food on KCBX.

🎧 Listen to this episode of the SLO Equity Podcast at diversityslo.org/sloequity or find it on Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts.

➑️ As part of The Ethics Edit, this discussion explores how ethical principles such as justice, dignity, inclusion, and responsibility take shape within community life. Drawing from his experiences in ministry, public engagement, and relationship-building across diverse groups, Father Ian reflects on what communities owe one another and how belonging can be cultivated in meaningful ways.

πŸ“ The views expressed are those of the speakers and do not necessarily reflect those of any affiliated organizations.

πŸ™ŒπŸ½ Last week we wrapped up our School Speaker program for the 25/26 school year with a presentation by a Ukrainian refugee who shared his personal story of fleeing his beloved country with his wife and young son after the Russian invasion.

"You could hear a pin drop in the room as the 8th graders listened intently and asked probing, thoughtful questions afterwards." said our Education Committee Chair, Kathy Minck, who attended the presentation.

This school year we presented stories like this 11 times! from Nipomo to Paso Robles. All completely free for the schools. We're looking forward to next school year! Thank you all for your support 🀎

This week we gathered to celebrate the Chicano experience in San Luis Obispo County and the history that continues to shape our region. 🀎

✨ One of the most meaningful parts of the evening was realizing that many of the people attending were part of the history being shared, individuals whose work, leadership, and advocacy helped create lasting change in our community.

πŸ™ŒπŸ½ Congratulations to Mia Lawrence for the successful exhibit "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness: The Chicano Central Coast Experience", an exhibition drawing from materials on loan from the Chicano San Luis Obispo Archive collected by Pedro Arroyo.

Thank you to the History Center for helping create space to honor these stories. Thank you to our partners the Latino Outreach Council, and the City of SLO Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Office for coming together to make this happen! πŸ’ͺ🏽

πŸ“† This May 27, join us for "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness: The Chicano Central Coast Experience", an exhibition examining the history, contributions, and lived experiences of the Chicano community in San Luis Obispo County. πŸͺ…

✊🏽 The exhibit reflects on how Chicano communities have shaped and contributed to the cultural, social, and civic fabric of the Central Coast.

πŸ™ŒπŸ½ Curated and installed by Mia Lawrence and Christopher Rourke, the exhibition invites attendees to reflect on history, identity, representation, and the evolving meaning of belonging and community in the United States.

We are happy to be working with the county board to celebrate our community 🀎 Last month we supported the presentation of two resolutions at the SLO County Board of Supervisors, celebrating Arab American Heritage Month, and Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month πŸŽŠπŸŽ‰πŸ™ŒπŸ½.

These recognitions matter because they help affirm the stories, cultures, and contributions that have long been part of San Luis Obispo County, even when they haven’t always been visible or acknowledged. We’re grateful to continue building partnerships that help our communities feel seen, valued, and reflected in the places where decisions are made. 🀎

Thank you to Chair Paulding, , for introducing the resolutions, and to the entire board for supporting them. We appreciate the Board of Supervisors taking time to recognize and celebrate the diverse communities that help shape San Luis Obispo County. Let's keep going!
