Kittatinny Ridge Conservation Landscape The Kittatinny winds 185 miles through Pennsylvania. It is a Global IBA, home to PA's portion of the A.T. and PA's most climate resilient landscape.

The Kittatinny Ridge and Appalachian Trail Project, led by Audubon Pennsylvania in partnership with the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, is a collaborative effort of local, regional, and state organizations and agencies to focus public attention on the importance of the Ridge and AT through Pennsylvania and to protect the Ridge from further habitat loss, fragmentation, and inappropriate land use.

Superhero Facts about the Allegheny Woodrat:
1. Exceptional Nest Builder The Allegheny Woodrat is incredibly skilled at constructing intricate nests, made primarily or exclusively from thousands of pieces of the inner cambium of bark. Known as packrats, they adorn their nest with objects found locally. Its cozy nests serve as both shelter and pantry, as these woodrats are known to hoard a diverse array of seeds, nuts, and tasty morsels to see them through the winter.
2. Extraordinary Planner Despite its tiny size, the Allegheny Woodrat makes huge food caches of dried vegetation and mushrooms, along with seeds like acorns. They surround their food cache with many dried leaves as an alarm, signaling the arrival or any unwanted guests.

The Central Pennsylvania Conservancy's Letort Spring Garden Preserve near Carlisle is a little pocket of wild in the middle of a developed landscape, and it's teeming with life. Minks hunting along the banks, muskrats munching waterside snacks, and a whole colony of Big Brown Bats living in a historic barn. 🦇 This is what protected green space makes possible. Meet the packrats of the Kittatinny Ridge. The Allegheny woodrat is little-known and seldom-seen species in Pennsylvania. In fact, when most of us hear the word “woodrat,” our mind probably jumps straight to the critters we associate with sewer systems, the spread of diseases, and maybe even the ROUS (Rodents of Unusual Size) in the fire swamps of The Princess Bride. The Allegheny woodrat is not closely related to the non-native Norway rat we picture. Not even a little bit! Instead, Allegheny woodrats are our native species of packrat that are endemic to the Appalachian Mountains and found nowhere else on earth. The golden eagle, scientifically known as Aquila chrysaetos, stands as a remarkable apex predator in the avian hierarchy. Equipped with an enormous wingspan that can reach up to 7 feet, it possesses an awe-inspiring combination of power and finesse in its flight. With keen eyesight, the golden eagle can spot prey from great distances. Combined with an ability to exert astonishing grip force with its talons, golden eagles are proficient hunters.

Golden eagles spend their summers in eastern Canada (with nests documented as far south as Maine and New York) and winter further along the Appalachians as far south as Alabama. They are an annual presence during spring and fall migration on the Kittatinny much to the delight of avid birders at one of the many hawk watches along the Ridge.
