Kittatinny Ridge Conservation Landscape The Kittatinny winds 185 miles through Pennsylvania. It is a Global IBA, home to PA's portion of the A.T. and PA's most climate resilient landscape.

The Kittatinny Ridge and Appalachian Trail Project, led by Audubon Pennsylvania in partnership with the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, is a collaborative effort of local, regional, and state organizations and agencies to focus public attention on the importance of the Ridge and AT through Pennsylvania and to protect the Ridge from further habitat loss, fragmentation, and inappropriate land use.

Controlled burns go back thousands of years, and thePennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources's Bureau of Forestry carries on that tradition today with careful planning and strict safety standards.

One burn in Michaux State Forest topped 1,000 acres, a Bureau record, to help restore a rare pitch pine–scrub oak habitat!

With an eye on climate resilience and wildlife migration, it would seem like developing safe passage between the Kittatinny Ridge and South Mountain would be a great idea. And it is! Wildlife traveling between these two forested habitats have a perilous journey crossing major highway systems, farmland, warehouse and suburban development, and urban centers.

The Broad-winged Hawk is the smallest and most migratory Buteo in eastern North America. This stout, compact, forest-dwelling raptor occurs in most of the forested landscapes of the eastern United States and southern Canada east of British Columbia.

The species is a complete, long-distance migrant that winters in Central and South America. Unlike most other North American raptors, broadwings flock during migration, and in autumn the majority of individuals pass migration watchsites during a brief and concentrated two-week period, including Hawk Mountain Sanctuary Association on the Kittatinny Ridge.

The Berks County Conservation District's Forestry Management Outreach Program connects landowners with the resources they need to care for their woodlands, especially land next to big protected forests like State Game Lands, parks, and water authority properties.

📍 646 forest parcels identified for outreach
🌳 13,000+ acres of forest that could grow Berks County's protected forest by about 50%
🐟 Priority areas include wild trout streams, drinking water sources, and Golden-winged Warbler breeding habitat

🌱 From tree giveaways to cover crop incentives, Perry County Conservation District is showing how local partnerships can lead to big environmental wins! With support from the Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership (Ten Million Trees for PA), residents and schools planted over 800 saplings, boosting clean water and air 🌳💧— and the Cover Crop Incentive Program helped farmers plant nearly 9,500 acres in soil-smart crops to protect waterways and build healthier landscapes.
