Kittatinny Ridge Conservation Landscape The Kittatinny winds 185 miles through Pennsylvania. It is a Global IBA, home to PA's portion of the A.T. and PA's most climate resilient landscape.

The Kittatinny Ridge and Appalachian Trail Project, led by Audubon Pennsylvania in partnership with the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, is a collaborative effort of local, regional, and state organizations and agencies to focus public attention on the importance of the Ridge and AT through Pennsylvania and to protect the Ridge from further habitat loss, fragmentation, and inappropriate land use.

đŸȘ¶ For over 50 years, Hawk Mountain Sanctuary Association has been monitoring American kestrels through its Nest Box Program on the Kittatinny Ridge.

With help from local residents, private landowners, and dedicated volunteers, more than 200 nest boxes have been installed within a 25-mile radius of the Sanctuary. Each spring, nestlings are banded, productivity is tracked, and trainees gain hands-on experience in conservation science.

Since the Fall of 2023, the Pennsylvania Conservancy has been working to preserve a 261-acre forested property near Newville, PA. Nestled in a notch in the Kittatinny Ridge known as Doubling Gap, the property features complex topography which contributes to a higher-than-average climate resilience and potential for absorption of atmospheric carbon. These ecosystem services are compounded by the site’s connectivity to other protected lands, specifically those of the Tuscarora State Forest. Connectivity with these preserved areas ensures large, contiguous blocks of forested land are available for the migration of wildlife, recharging of groundwater aquifers, sequestering of atmospheric carbon.

In addition to the natural qualities and resources described above, the property hosts a half-mile segment of the Tuscarora Trail. Learn more about the property, the family, CPC, and the partners that made it happen.

The Ridge’s long, uninterrupted forest cover makes it a globally significant migratory route for birds. In Pennsylvania, it contains more than 160 miles of the Appalachian Trail. It's also home to Fort Indiantown Gap, the busiest National Guard training center in the country.

The Jefferson Salamander (Ambystoma jeffersonianum) is a species of mole salamander and one of the first to breed in spring. They will often leave their burrows and cross snow-covered areas to reach breeding pools. Consequently, they have a jump-start on their Spotted Salamander “cousins” and will often feast on the much smaller Spotted Salamander larvae.

Jefferson Salamanders requires seasonal pools for breeding, but otherwise spend the remainder of their time underground in burrows hunting for worms and other invertebrates.

The Appalachian Trail spans over 2,000 miles from Georgia to Maine. Because the Trail spans a diverse range of ecosystems and climate zones, it is an excellent study area for investigating the ecological impacts of climate change—and that's exactly what the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) is doing!

AMC is looking for citizen scientists to help track the Trail with its Flowers and Fauna along the Appalachian Trail Corridor project. Whether you’re a pro or new to identifying wildlife, you can contribute to AMC climate research simply by taking photos of target species and uploading them with the iNaturalist app. You'll be part f a network of volunteers providing information that is essential to identifying the most vulnerable species and places threatened by climate change.
