John James Audubon Center's Norristown Schoolyard Habitat Project

John James Audubon Center's Norristown Schoolyard Habitat Project John James Audubon Center and Norristown Area School District have partnered to create schoolyard habitats and outdoor classrooms in elementary schools.

Audubon’s mission to conserve and restore natural ecosystems for the benefit of humanity directly impacts the needs of all communities. The John James Audubon Center at Mill Grove serves urban communities west of Philadelphia, where we provide significant experiential educational opportunities for diverse audiences. Through Audubon’s strong partnership with the Norristown Area School District, we

have created six Schoolyard Habitats that not only serve as an outdoor classroom, but create bird and wildlife habitats, reduce runoff, improve water quality, beautify the grounds, and inspire environmental stewardship in the community. Audubon actively engages both students and teachers through custom in-class programs and annual teacher trainings to encourage regular use of the Schoolyard Habitats as an outdoor learning space. Through our Schoolyard Habitat program, we’ve succeeded in engaging diverse audiences in conservation -- not only increasing environmental literacy, but also inspiring more people to take action to improve their communities.

We've been working hard this summer to keep up our Schoolyard Habitats! Check out the car load of Wild Bergamot we pulled up from Musselman Learning Center. While Wild Bergamot is a Pennsylvania native, biodiversity is extremely important to maintain. With most of the Wild Bergamot pulled, the wide variety of native plants at Musselman's Schoolyard Habitat has more room to grow!
