🏛️ A Glimpse Into Gate City Lodge No. 2 History

While cleaning out the storage room at Gate City Lodge No. 2, we made an incredible discovery — several original Lodge minutes books that are more than 120 years old!

Among the books are Lodge minutes dating back to 1899, along with volumes covering the early 1900s and continuing into the 1920s. These fragile books provide a remarkable firsthand record of the Brothers who came before us, the business of the Lodge, and the history being made within our Lodge more than a century ago.

📖 Minutes: November 1899 – January 1903
📖 Minutes: January 1902 – July 1906
📖 Minutes: August 1906 – November 1912
📖 Minutes: 1924 – 1928

These aren’t simply old books sitting in a storage room. They are pieces of Gate City Lodge No. 2’s heritage.

As Freemasons, we have a responsibility to preserve what was entrusted to us so that those who come after us can understand and appreciate the foundation upon which our Lodge was built.

We will be taking steps to properly preserve and digitize these historic minutes, protecting the original documents while making their contents accessible to future generations of Gate City Masons.

Over 120 years old — and still telling the story of our Lodge.

🌙🔥 A Night to Remember at Gate City Lodge #2 🔥🌙

Tonight, Gate City Lodge #2 had the distinct honor of raising four worthy candidates to the sublime degree of Master Mason, representing three separate lodges:

🔹 Atlanta-Peachtree Lodge No. 59
🔹 Piedmont Lodge No. 447
🔹 Palestine Lodge No. 486

Tonight also marked the 17th Annual Gate City Lodge #2 Cemetery Degree—one of the most anticipated and cherished traditions of our Masonic year.

By the light of the torches, beneath the night sky, and within a cemetery laid out in the form of a Masonic Lodge, our brethren came together to confer this ancient degree in a setting unlike any other.

There is something profoundly moving about standing together in such a place—reminded of the brevity of life, the importance of our obligations, and the enduring bonds of Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth.

Four candidates entered the evening as Fellow Crafts and emerged as Master Masons, surrounded by Brothers from across our Masonic family.

To the newly raised Master Masons: may the lessons of this evening remain with you throughout your Masonic journey.

And to all the Brothers who traveled from near and far, took part in the degree, prepared the grounds, carried the torches, worked behind the scenes, and helped preserve this remarkable tradition—thank you.

The Cemetery Degree is more than an event. It is a tradition, a shared experience, and a reminder that while our individual journeys are temporary, the principles of Masonry endure.

How good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity.

⚔️ Congratulations, Brothers! ⚔️

What an outstanding evening of Masonic Education at Gate City Lodge #2!

A sincere thank you to Worshipful Brother David Llewelyn for sharing such a fascinating and thought-provoking lecture with us tonight. His knowledge, insight, and passion for our Craft made for an engaging evening that gave us all something to reflect upon.

Masonic education reminds us that the work of a Mason extends far beyond the lodge room. There is always more to learn, more history to discover, and more light to seek.

Thank you, Worshipful Brother David, for sharing your knowledge and helping us continue to grow together as Brothers.

“How good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity.”

🥤🔨 A FREEMASON WHO CHANGED THE WORLD

Dr. John Stith Pemberton (1831–1888)

Most people know John Stith Pemberton as the Atlanta pharmacist and chemist who created the original formula for Coca-Cola in 1886.

But did you know that Dr. Pemberton was also a Freemason?

Pemberton was a member of Columbian Lodge No. 7 in Columbus, Georgia, where he took part in the Masonic fraternity during his years in Georgia. His Masonic affiliation is supported by historical Masonic records, and Masonic symbols can also be found on his grave marker at Linwood Cemetery in Columbus.

Pemberton's story is particularly fascinating because of the impact he would eventually have on Atlanta and the world. Working as a pharmacist and chemist, he developed the beverage that would become Coca-Cola—one of the most recognizable products in history.

While Asa Griggs Candler later acquired Pemberton's interests and built Coca-Cola into a major corporation, it was Brother John Stith Pemberton who created the original formula.

From a Georgia pharmacy to a global brand, Pemberton's story reminds us that the men who have passed through our fraternity have come from countless professions and walks of life—and some have left remarkable legacies behind.

This is on the threshold of our preparation room inner door leading into the lodge.

“Aut Caesar, aut nihil” literally means “Either Caesar or nothing.”

Historically, Caesar represents the highest level of power, achievement, or distinction. So figuratively it means:

“I will achieve the highest goal—or I will accept nothing less.”

It can convey ideas like:

* Go big or go home
* All or nothing
* Strive for the highest position
* Refuse mediocrity
* Set your sights on greatness

The phrase is often associated with Cesare Borgia, who reportedly used it as a motto. It has also been used as a personal motto by people emphasizing ambition, leadership, and determination.

Atlanta-Peachtree Lodge, no. 59Palestine Lodge 486🔨 A Night of Brotherly Love & Relief at Gate City Lodge #2 🔨

Tonight, Gate City Lodge #2 had the distinct honor of conferring the Master Mason Degree for two candidates—one from Atlanta-Peachtree Lodge No. 59 and one from Palestine Lodge No. 486.

It was a wonderful example of what makes Freemasonry so special. Brothers from different lodges came together, not as separate organizations, but as one fraternity, united by the same principles of Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth.

The evening reminded us that while our lodge names and numbers may differ, the bonds we share as Masons know no boundaries. We support one another, teach one another, and celebrate one another’s milestones.

Congratulations to our newest Master Masons! May your journey through the Craft continue to be filled with light, knowledge, friendship, and service.
