Trump’s comments about discussing Taiwan arms sales with Xi Jinping raise concerns about whether Taiwan’s security support could be treated as a bargaining issue in U.S.-China diplomacy. The core issue is how Washington balances high-level talks with Beijing against longstanding commitments to Taiwan’s defense.

The U.S. State Department’s reaffirmation of commitments to Taiwan shows how quickly Washington must clarify Taiwan policy when presidential remarks create uncertainty. The episode underscores the sensitivity of arms sales, the Six Assurances, and U.S.-China summit diplomacy.

The United States Department of State on Tuesday reiterated Washington's commitments to Taiwan after President Donald Trump seemed prepared to undermine one of those commitments in remarks on his pending meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping (習近平).

Taiwan would need at least 12 submarines to reach modern fleet capabilities, CSBC Corp, Taiwan chairman Chen Cheng-hung (陳政宏) said in an interview broadcast on Friday, citing a US assessment. CSBC is testing the nation’s first indigenous defense submarine, the Hai Kun (海鯤, Narwhal), which is scheduled to be delivered to the navy next month or in July. aiwan would require at least 12 submarines to establish a modern submarine force after assessing the nation’s operational environment and defense needs, he said, citing a US assessment.

Anticipation is high this week as President Donald Trump prepares to travel to Beijing to meet with China’s leader, Xi Jinping (習近平), for the first time in his second term. Expectations for the outcomes of the summit, however, are low. That’s what Domino Theory found after asking leading U.S.-China experts on what they expect to see in Beijing later this week. The U.S. and China have been enjoying a period of relative calm since agreeing to a trade truce during Trump and Xi’s meeting in South Korea last October. Yet the summit still comes at a fraught time for both countries, with the United States’ weapons stocks depleted from a war in Iran that has roiled global energy markets, while rapid advances in AI thrust new uncertainty into the world of cybersecurity.

China’s 2026 Law on Promoting Ethnic Unity and Progress codifies the nation’s ongoing shift away from institutionalising ethnic difference and towards assimilation. Principally, the Law aims to subordinate the country's 56 official nationalities to a single overarching ‘Chinese nationality’ (zhonghua minzu) defined by the Party. Read more about it here:

China’s Law on Promoting Ethnic Unity and Progress marks Beijing’s furthest step towards a more assimilationist model of national ethnic integration.

What lessons is China learning from the current U.S.–Iran conflict and how could those lessons shape a future Taiwan scenario? Lieutenant General (Retired) Hooper breaks down the key takeaways military strategists in Beijing are likely studying right now, from drone warfare and “interceptor math” to logistics, economic choke points, and the importance of striking first.

Now, the Trump team seems to be taking strategic ambiguity to a new level. It remains highly unclear whether the U.S. president will tilt toward China or align with traditional allies and partners to confront Chinese coercion and aggression in the Indo-Pacific. The summit is thus the first real test of Trump’s true alignment in an increasingly contested and divided Asia.

How the summit could change the course of U.S.-China competition.

Global South perspectives are increasingly important to Taiwan’s international position. The CSIS Freeman Chair convened an international task force on Taiwan and the Global South. Members evaluated the state of Taiwan’s relationships in the Global South, opportunities to expand engagement, and Global South perspectives on cross-Strait issues.

Taiwan’s confidence in U.S. ties ahead of the Trump-Xi meeting shows how Taipei is trying to manage uncertainty without appearing alarmed. The concern is not only whether Taiwan is discussed, but whether any statement from the summit could shift expectations around U.S. Taiwan policy.

Taiwan's government remains confident in stable relations with the United States but is closely watching how the Taiwan issue will be addressed at a summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping (習近平) later this week, Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) said Monday.
Trump is scheduled to visit Beijing from Wednesday to Friday for a summit with Xi. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said last week that although Taiwan would likely be on the agenda, both Washington and Taipei view maintaining stability in the Taiwan Strait as being in their interests.
