The Farm School

The Farm School Our mission is to connect people to the land. Est. 1989 The Farm School mission is to connect people to the land.

We are an organization of multiple interweaving programs spread out over almost 400 acres of land in rural Mass, linked together under our common purpose and stewardship. In order to best achieve its mission, racial equity and liberation has become a central goal for the organization. Our Program for Visiting Schools provides multi-day, residential, school-year and summer farm programs for over 1,

500 young people and their teachers each year. Our typical program is a two and a half day field trip for middle schoolers, in which we task the students with running all the aspects of the farm: cooking the meals, and working in the garden, forest and barn with the animals. Children are given the opportunity to experience their own capacity to contribute to the farm. Our Chicken Coop Middle School is an onsite, full-time, one-room home school cooperative for local kids. Students attend classes with our teachers on the farm everyday. Farm life, art and music classes run alongside math, literature, social studies and science. Our suite of New Programs look to build even deeper connections to the land for the students we serve, for the communities they come from and by and for the Nipmuc People, who are among the original people of the land upon which the farm rests.

Today is The Chicken Coop School Graduation, and as we launch this class of amazing 8th graders, we're also celebrating Wendy Davenport's retirement!

Wendy has been growing The Farm School since the very beginning and teaching at the Coop for 25 years. Her reading and writing workshops are legendary, and her book recommendations are a real gift. She has tended to us all and brought immense beauty and care to the land.

We're excited for the adventures to come in this next chapter, and grateful she's just down the road and will continue to be a part of The Farm School community!

We started our week by raising a timber frame with The Chicken Coop School!! The frame was charred to increase durability using a Japanese method called Yakisugi.

The pine and oak were felled, milled, and the frame cut right on the farm by Bradley, Julian, and visiting youth.

Set next to our wood-burning oven, it’s a stunning addition to the farm and will be a great shelter for our outdoor kitchen space. Think of the pizzas!!

✨ We still have spots left for our Summer Program and 7th and 8th grade spots at The Chicken Coop School. Check out our profile for links! And if you're too old to join our programs as a participant, we're also hiring! ✨

6:52am...... 11:58am

This ornamental cherry is one of our favorite markers of spring. It was planted by Uncle Perry at an early Farm School board meeting.

Perry was founder Ben Holmes' uncle whose Ohio farm inspired him to create this place.
