The World Health Organization's 2026 theme centers on an important message: people with lived experience of mental health challenges should not simply be asked to tell their stories—they should have meaningful opportunities to help shape the policies, services, and decisions that affect their lives.
Mental health is personal.
Behind every statistic is a person.
Behind every diagnosis is a story.
Behind every recovery journey is a human being with strengths, challenges, hopes, relationships, and dreams.
And those experiences matter.
In the United States, 61.5 million adults experienced mental illness in 2024, representing 23.4% of the adult population. Yet mental health is about more than statistics. It is about making sure people have access to compassionate care, supportive communities, meaningful resources, and opportunities to participate in their own recovery.
Lived experiences heard. Real voices. Real change.
Today, we recognize World Mental Health Day—a day to raise awareness, challenge stigma, promote mental health, and remind our communities that mental health is an essential part of overall health.
But awareness is only the beginning.
Mental health belongs to all of us.
Today and every day, let's build communities where people feel safe enough to speak, supported enough to seek help, and valued enough to know that their story matters.
Happy World Mental Health Day.
