Johnny Mac Scholar Spotlight: Gavin Chism 🎓🇺🇸

Gavin is pursuing a degree in Political Science at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, with plans to attend law school and advocate for wounded veterans and military families.

Growing up, Gavin served as a secondary caregiver to his father, Army Staff Sergeant Cody Chism, who was severely wounded during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2008. He also watched his mother, Vanessa, become a national advocate for military and veteran caregivers. Seeing her use her voice to support families like theirs helped shape Gavin’s own desire to make a difference.

Through education, Gavin now has the opportunity to turn those experiences into a future of his own. We’re proud to support Gavin as he builds that future.

We’re honored to announce Corporal Garrett Jones, U.S. Marine Corps, Retired, as the Keynote Speaker for our 9th Annual Atlanta Gala on October 16.

Inspired by the events of 9/11, Garrett enlisted in the Marine Corps in 2005 and deployed to Iraq. In 2007, he was severely wounded by an IED, resulting in the amputation of his left leg and numerous other life-altering injuries.

After more than 20 surgeries and a remarkable recovery, Garrett became the first U.S. service member to redeploy into combat as an amputee within a year of his injury.

Following his military service, Garrett built a distinguished career in the Intelligence Community, serving in senior government intelligence and communications roles. He continues to give back by mentoring disabled veterans as they pursue new professional opportunities.

We look forward to welcoming Garrett to Atlanta and hearing his story of service, sacrifice, and resilience.
