A blessing for PeaceJam from His Holiness the Dalai Lama!🌎

Last month, PeaceJam Board Chair Hinrich Kaiser had the extraordinary opportunity to meet His Holiness the Dalai Lama in Dharamsala, India and share a piece of PeaceJam history from 20 years ago.

As His Holiness looked at a photograph from PeaceJam’s 10th anniversary, he lifted it to his forehead in a beautiful gesture of connection and blessing.

Thirty years ago, the Dalai Lama stood at the beginning of the PeaceJam journey. Today, his connection reminds us of the vision that continues to inspire generations of young people to create a more peaceful world. 🌎

Today, we celebrate Nobel Peace Laureate Jody Williams! 🎉

Since joining PeaceJam in 1998, Jody has inspired generations of young people to turn their passion for peace, justice, and human rights into action. As the co-founder and chief strategist of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, she helped lead a global grassroots movement that contributed to the 1997 Ottawa Treaty—and she continues to show what’s possible when people come together for change.

This weekend, we’re honored to welcome Jody back to South Africa for the 11th Annual PeaceJam South Africa Conference, where she’ll join young changemakers in celebrating PeaceJam’s 30th anniversary and exploring this year’s theme:

Peace Takes All of Us. 🌍💙

Happy birthday, Jody! We’re grateful for your leadership, your fierce commitment to human security, and your continued belief in the power of young people to change the world.

📼From the archives: A moment that changed PeaceJam forever.

In 1999, Archbishop Desmond Tutu brought together young people from across South Africa for a PeaceJam conference on Robben Island. Together with hundreds of youth leaders, Desmond Tutu transformed a place once defined by oppression and imprisonment into a powerful symbol of reconciliation and hope.

In one unforgettable moment, Archbishop Tutu and his wife, Leah, joined the young people in cleaning the historic L***r Church, helping reopen it to the public after nearly 70 years.

This historic gathering laid the foundation for more than two decades of PeaceJam youth leadership across Africa.

From Robben Island to today, one message remains:

Peace Takes All of Us. 💙

“PeaceJam brings joy to the hard work of changing the world.” -Archbishop Desmond Tutu

Today, we celebrate the birthday of the late Archbishop Desmond Tutu, whose transformational spirit helped shape PeaceJam from its earliest days.

A founding Nobel Peace Laureate member, Archbishop Tutu brought his wisdom, his courage, and his incredible joy, to PeaceJam. He hosted one of PeaceJam’s earliest international conferences in Cape Town, South Africa, bringing young people across communities to Robben Island, and inviting them to confront history while imagining a more just future.

He showed up for young people with joy and an unwavering belief in their power to create change. He helped inspire the Billion Acts of Peace Campaign, challenging PeaceJam to turn its 10th anniversary into a global call to action. He even presided over the marriage of PeaceJam Founders Dawn and Ivan!

As we celebrate 30 years of PeaceJam, we reflect with gratitude on the extraordinary legacy Archbishop Tutu helped build and on the generations of young people who continue to carry it forward.
