Did you know PeaceJam is thriving in 5 countries across Africa? 🌍💙

Leaders from Ghana, Nigeria, Liberia, Uganda, and South Africa recently gathered in person for a regional training and retreat focused on connection, shared learning, and strengthening collaboration across PeaceJam Chapters.

Together, they celebrated the progress happening across the continent and explored new ways to deepen regional partnerships and expand PeaceJam’s impact. They also began shaping a long-term vision for PeaceJam in Africa, with a shared goal of reaching even more young people with PeaceJam’s inspirational and life-changing programs.

As we celebrate 30 years of PeaceJam, we’re reflecting on the incredible journey of this global movement, including its roots in Africa. In 1998, the first PeaceJam conference on the continent was held in Cape Town alongside Nobel Peace Laureate Desmond Tutu, marking an important chapter in PeaceJam’s growing global community.

More than 25 years later, that community continues to grow, connect, and inspire across the continent. Peace Takes All of Us. 🌍✨

As part of our 30th anniversary celebration, PeaceJam Europe Coordinator Luke Addison caught up with Nobel Peace Laureate Leymah Gbowee at the 2025 PeaceJam South Africa Conference to reflect on what PeaceJam has meant to her and the impact of the movement over the past three decades.

This year’s anniversary theme, “Peace Takes All of Us,” reminds us that lasting change happens when people come together across generations, communities, and cultures to lead with courage, compassion, and purpose.

This summer, PeaceJam’s 30th Anniversary celebration took center stage in Ghana! 🌍

More than 1,200 young people gathered at the University of Ghana for the PeaceJam Ghana Annual Youth Leadership Conference, Compassion Beyond Borders, a major global event in our year-long celebration of 30 years of youth leadership, service, and peacebuilding.

Hosted by the West Africa Centre for Peace Foundation and PeaceJam Ghana, the gathering brought together students, educators, and changemakers united by a shared vision of a more peaceful and compassionate world. The celebration was made even more powerful by Nobel Peace Laureate Kailash Satyarthi, who reminded young leaders of their ability to create meaningful change in their communities and beyond.

The conference also celebrated 19 years of the West Africa Centre for Peace Foundation’s partnership in bringing PeaceJam’s mission to young people across Africa.

From Ghana to communities around the world, this milestone reminds us that lasting change is built through collective action, courageous leadership, and choosing compassion over division.
