Protecting your child from every consequence may feel like love. But consequences are often where some of life’s most important lessons begin.

When a child breaks a rule at school, receives a consequence, and immediately has an adult fighting to make that consequence disappear, what are they actually learning?

Not necessarily that they were right.

They may be learning that rules are negotiable. That authority can be challenged whenever they dislike the outcome. That someone else will step in and make uncomfortable consequences go away.

Accountability isn’t about humiliating children or punishing every mistake. It’s about teaching them that choices have outcomes, mistakes need to be owned, and sometimes the only way to grow is to experience a consequence you don’t like.

There will eventually come a point when the person enforcing the rules isn’t a teacher or principal. And the consequences may be far more serious than detention, losing a privilege, or getting suspended.

Parents should absolutely advocate for their children when something is genuinely unfair.

But advocating for your child and shielding your child from accountability are not the same thing.

Perhaps one of the most important questions we can ask ourselves is this:

Are we protecting children from consequences today at the expense of the adults they’ll become tomorrow?
