Our final donation program of the trip was just a 15-minute drive from the first location of the day. When we arrived at the second community center, the families were already waiting for us. Once again, many of the children spoke a different dialect than we were familiar with, making conversation challenging.

After distributing all of the bicycles, we handed out the rest of the American candy we had brought from home, along with large Pedal Forward stickers for the children to decorate their new bikes.

Following our group photo, the children immediately began riding around the community center, excited to try out their new bicycles. Many were still wrapped in protective plastic, so they eagerly jumped off to tear it away. A small bonfire was lit to dispose of the packaging, and we adjusted many of the seats to ensure each bike fit its rider properly.

Unfortunately it began to rain so the children started riding home before the weather worsened. Just before we departed, the community leaders presented us with more than 100 pounds of rice steamed in bamboo tubes as a gift. Since we would be leaving Vietnam shortly afterward, we gave much of it to our driver to take home to his family.

With that, we concluded our fifth and final donation program of the trip. We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to help these children gain greater access to education through reliable transportation. The people we met, the stories we heard, and the memories we made will stay with us for a lifetime. Thank you to everyone who supported us and made this journey possible!

On the final day of the trip, we departed at 7:00 a.m. for a two-hour drive to the first part of our donation program. We were still in Vietnam’s Central Highlands, where the landscape remained dry and agricultural. This village was located right along the Vietnam–Cambodia border.

When we arrived, the children at the local summer school were outside for recess, so we joined them in games of soccer and tag. We were then invited into their classrooms to participate in their lessons. The older students played Simon Says in Vietnamese, while the younger class practiced addition using Arabic numerals.

As the sponsored families began to arrive from surrounding villages, we had the opportunity to meet each of them individually. Because many lived far from the school, reliable transportation was a constant challenge. This program served both children and adults, all of whom needed bicycles for different purposes, whether traveling to school, work, or around their communities. Once again, many families spoke a different Vietnamese dialect than we were familiar with, making communication challenging. Several families also generously thanked us with baskets of fresh fruit, which we enjoyed before continuing to our second program of the day.

After everyone had received their bicycles, we handed out American candy for the families to try and shared the remaining treats with the children at the summer school.

It was difficult to say goodbye, but after spending time with the families and children, we began the drive to our second and final donation program of the trip.

Back to School event with , serving over 150 families at Northminster Presbyterian Church! 📚✏️

Families received free school supplies, backpacks, and home goods baskets, and we were able to raffle off 10 bicycles and helmets of all sizes. Many students were excited to ride their new bikes to school, while parents were grateful to have an additional source of transportation for their children. 🚲🚲

We also enjoyed a fire truck demonstration and food truck vendors. Fulton County Health provided free health education and blood pressure screenings for attendees. 🚒🏥

Families had fun with bouncy houses, face painting, and other activities throughout the day. 🎨🖌️

Thank you to all of the volunteers who spent part of their summer serving alongside us; we couldn’t have done it without you! 💙

Đắk Lắk | 50 Bikes

Before the program, we arrived in Pleiku and departed at 6:00 a.m. on Day 6 for a three-hour drive to Đắk Lắk for our first donation program in Vietnam’s Central Highlands. Compared to the North, this region was warmer, sunnier, and characterized by dry, agricultural landscapes.

The donation program was held at Cư Kbang Church, which serves families who often travel long distances from remote villages to attend.

When we arrived, we met with the church leaders and volunteers as families began to arrive; many with up to five people sharing a single motorbike. We spent time speaking with the families and learning about their circumstances. Some of the children were from the Hmong ethnic minority and wore their traditional clothing. They had only moved to the village about two weeks prior and were in need of additional support as they adjusted to their new community. Because they spoke a different dialect, communication was sometimes difficult. Each child was able to choose a bicycle that best fit their size.

After all of the bicycles had been distributed, we gathered for a ceremony where the children sang songs of gratitude in Vietnamese. We then handed out American candy and Pedal Forward shirts, stickers, and pins. The kids this time especially enjoyed trying the candy, and many had fun playing with the gum.

Before the families headed home, we played a traditional recess game with the students that our parents used to play growing up called “Omm.” Finally as we drove back home, we saw many children riding their new bikes back home on the dirt roads beside us.

We then returned to Pleiku to prepare for our fourth donation program the following day!

Nam Dịch | 150 Bikes

For our second donation program in Northern Vietnam, we departed at 6:00 AM for the 2.5-hour journey to Nam Dịch. This marked our final event in Vietnam’s northern mountain region.

Like our first program, we distributed bikes and shared American candy, but this time we were able to spend even more time with the children teaching them how to ride. We helped students of all ages from 1st to 9th grade, and many brought their younger siblings.

During the ceremony, Pedal Forward was honored to receive a Letter of Appreciation from the People’s Committee of Nam Dịch Commune.

Throughout the day, we interviewed families to better understand their stories and the challenges they face accessing education. After the program, we shared lunch with local law enforcement, volunteers, and teachers, celebrating the day’s impact while experiencing the region’s local cuisine and hospitality.

Being able to experience the local landscape, culture, and people of the Northern region was a truly life changing experienice, and we are proud for the opportunity to help so many families along the way.

Finally, we drove 6 hrs back to Hanoi before flying to the Central Highlands for the next chapter of our humanitarian trip!
