Our students got the privilege of cleaning the church and covering the statues at Sacred Heart Aberdeen SD. What a blessing it was for all to tend to the statues up close as we prepare our hearts for the Easter Triduum!

It’s time to celebrate! Happy Fat Tuesday! 👑🥞🎂💚💛💜

It’s the last day before Lent begins!

In Poland, and in parts of the United States like Chicago with a large Polish population, Fat Tuesday (and sometimes also the Thursday prior) is Paczki Day, and you eat sugar-covered jelly-filled donut-type pastries called paczki, sometimes in a contest. In England, it’s called Shrove Tuesday after another word for confession, and you’re supposed to go to confession and eat pancakes, which both sound like really good ideas. In our house, we like to observe French-derived New Orleans Mardi Gras traditions. So, we start the day with a king cake and a crowning of the family King or Queen of Mardi Gras. For my homeschooled kids, we only do a half-day of school and they get time to watch TV and play video games because we don’t do those things during Lent. Sometime during the day, we make Mardi Gras masks, using the new CAY templates printed onto cardstock, and the kids decorate their masks with paint, markers, feathers, and jewels.

John Bosco, also known as Don Bosco, was an Italian Roman Catholic priest who dedicated his life to the betterment and education of street children, juvenile delinquents, and other disadvantaged youth, employing teaching methods based on love rather than punishment. A follower of the spirituality and philosophy of Saint Francis de Sales, Bosco dedicated his works to him when he founded the Salesians of Don Bosco.
