Protecting Sierra Leone’s environment and rivers is a collective responsibility that requires the commitment and action of everyone.

funded by Rivers for Change, has begun monitoring the impact created since the project commenced in June. The monitoring exercise officially began today, August 3rd, 2026, to assess the progress and outcomes achieved through the initiative.

Equiearth Foundation Sierra Leone (EE-FSiL) is pleased to announce the launch of its next flagship environmental initiative in September 2026.

This project will establish tree gardens in selected primary schools, providing pupils with hands-on environmental education while creating greener, healthier, and more climate-resilient learning environments. Moreover, through the planting of indigenous and fruit trees, the initiative will nurture a new generation of environmental stewards committed to protecting Sierra Leone's natural resources.

The women leaders in Makambo Community, Bombali District, Sierra Leone expressed their appreciation to Equiearth Foundation Sierra Leone for the timely intervention and support provided to rural female smallholder farmers. They acknowledged that the provision of farm tools and the knowledge-sharing session on climate-smart farming would significantly contribute to improving agricultural productivity, reducing the workload of women farmers, and strengthening household food security.
One of the women leaders stated,

“We are grateful to Equiearth Foundation Sierra Leone for recognizing the important role women farmers play in feeding our families and communities. Honestly, these farm tools have come at the right time and will help us improve our farming activities, increase production, and support our livelihoods. And we also appreciate the training on climate-smart farming because it has given us knowledge on how to farm sustainably and protect our environment.”

The women leaders further encouraged other organizations and stakeholders to continue supporting rural women farmers with agricultural resources, training, and opportunities that would promote economic empowerment and sustainable community development.

In the course of the project implementation, the Project Lead, Meliv Tina Kamara, facilitated a knowledge-sharing session with the beneficiary women on climate-smart farming practices, proper management and maintenance of farm tools, and sustainable agricultural techniques.

The session aimed to ensure that the beneficiaries not only received farming equipment but also gained the necessary knowledge to maximize the benefits of the tools and improve their long-term agricultural productivity.

Meliv Tina Kamara emphasized the importance of adopting environmentally friendly farming approaches that protect natural resources while improving crop yields. Moreover , he encouraged the women farmers to apply practices such as soil conservation, proper land preparation, organic farming methods, efficient use of farm inputs, and responsible management of agricultural tools.

He noted that, “Providing farmers with tools is an important step, but empowering them with knowledge on how to use and maintain those tools sustainably is what creates lasting impact. And climate-smart farming enables communities to increase productivity while adapting to the growing challenges of climate change.”

Furthermore, the training session strengthened the capacity of the beneficiary women by equipping them with practical knowledge that would support improved farm management, increased productivity, and greater resilience to climate-related challenges.

However, the engagement complemented the distribution of the 20 farm tools and reinforced Equiearth Foundation Sierra Leone’s commitment to promoting sustainable agriculture and women’s economic empowerment.

Agriculture remained a major source of livelihood for rural communities in Sierra Leone, with women playing a significant role in food production, household nutrition, and community development. However, many rural female smallholder farmers continued to face challenges, particularly limited access to essential farming tools and resources. And the lack of adequate agricultural equipment increased labour demands, reduced farming efficiency, and constrained the ability of women farmers to improve productivity, increase household income, and build resilience against climate-related challenges.

As highlighted by Amartya Sen, development was not only about economic growth but also about expanding people's capabilities and access to opportunities. Providing women with productive resources strengthened their ability to improve their livelihoods and contribute meaningfully to economic development.

Similarly, Wangari Maathai emphasized the importance of empowering communities, especially women, as key drivers of sustainable development and environmental protection.

Against this backdrop, recognizing the critical role of women in agriculture and the challenges they faced, Equiearth Foundation Sierra Leone implemented the project titled

“Enhancing Agricultural Productivity, Food Security, and Women's Economic Empowerment Through the Provision of Essential Farm Tools to Rural Female Smallholder Farmers in Bombali District, Sierra Leone.”

The initiative was designed to support rural women farmers by improving access to agricultural tools, promoting sustainable farming practices, and strengthening food security at the household and community levels.

On Tuesday, 28 July 2026, Equiearth Foundation Sierra Leone successfully implemented the project in Makambo Community, Bombali District, as part of its commitment to advancing sustainable agriculture, climate resilience, food security, and women's economic empowerment.

The implementation programme brought together community leaders and selected rural female smallholder farmers. In the course of the activity, the Foundation highlighted the important contribution of women farmers to agricultural production and household food security while acknowledging the difficulties caused by inadequate access to farming equipment.

Moreover, a total of 20 essential farm tools were distributed to 10 selected rural female smallholder farmers in Makambo Community. And the support was expected to reduce labour constraints, improve farming efficiency, increase agricultural productivity, and enhance household food security. Furthermore, the beneficiaries were also encouraged to adopt climate-smart and environmentally sustainable farming practices to strengthen their resilience to climate change impacts.

On the other hand, the beneficiary women expressed their appreciation to Equiearth Foundation Sierra Leone for the intervention and noted that the farm tools would significantly improve their farming activities, increase crop production, and contribute to improved household income. Equally, community leaders also appreciated the Foundation's efforts in supporting women farmers and promoting inclusive rural development within the community.

To this end, Equiearth Foundation Sierra Leone committed to monitoring the progress of the beneficiaries to assess the impact of the intervention on agricultural productivity, livelihoods, and women's economic empowerment. On top of that, and most importantly, the Foundation remained COMMITTED to expanding similar agricultural support initiatives to other rural communities across Sierra Leone.
