EVERY COMMUNITY HAS A STORY. IN KANGAMA, THAT STORY IS WRITTEN ACROSS THE LAND ITSELF.

For generations, these lands provided livelihoods, supported families, and sustained the community. Over time, however, extensive mining activities transformed much of the landscape, leaving behind degraded land and difficult questions about the future.

As part of the Environmental Rescue Project, LEAD Sierra Leone has spent the past weeks engaging local stakeholders, community leaders, landowners, youth representatives, and residents to better understand both the challenges and aspirations of the people who call Kangama home.

What stood out most during these engagements was not only the concern for the condition of the land, but also the determination of the community to be part of the solution.

Community stakeholders shared powerful reflections on the environmental changes they have witnessed over the years and expressed optimism that through meaningful participation, land mapping, and restoration planning, degraded lands can once again become productive and beneficial for future generations.

Their voices remind us that environmental restoration is not simply about rehabilitating land. It is about restoring opportunity, rebuilding livelihoods, strengthening community ownership, and creating hope where challenges once seemed overwhelming.

The Environmental Rescue Project continues to place communities at the center of every step of the process because lasting restoration can only be achieved when local knowledge, participation, and shared responsibility guide the journey forward.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the people of Kangama for their partnership, commitment, and vision for a greener and more resilient future.

With support from the Youth4Climate and Ministero dell'Ambiente e della Sicurezza Energetica we remain committed to restoring 500 hectares of mining-degraded land across five communities in Kono District.

Restoring ecosystems. Rebuilding livelihoods. Securing the future.

ONE SESSION. ONE LESSON. A NEW LEVEL OF CONFIDENCE.

"I thought I already knew how to write a CV, but the session opened my eyes to what employers actually expect."

For Alie Yusuf Kalokoh, the Career Connect Forum session on Job Application Edge: CV, Cover Letter and Interview Mastery was more than just a career training, it was a practical learning experience that challenged common misconceptions and introduced professional job application standards.

One lesson that stood out most for Alie was learning that personal details such as date of birth and home address are no longer necessary on a modern professional CV. This simple but powerful insight helped him better understand how to present himself professionally and focus on the information that truly matters to employers.

Beyond CV writing, the session strengthened his understanding of effective job applications, cover letter development, and interview preparation, while boosting his confidence to pursue future opportunities.

Alie's reflection mirrors the experience of many participants who left the session with new knowledge, practical skills, and a renewed sense of confidence in their career journey.

At LEAD Sierra Leone, we remain committed to creating learning spaces that equip young people with the skills, networks, and opportunities they need to thrive in an increasingly competitive world.

SOMETIMES, ALL A DREAM NEEDS IS THE RIGHT GUIDANCE TO FIND ITS PATH.

A few weeks ago, many of the young people who walked into the American Shelf at the Makeni Regional Library shared a common challenge: they had dreams, ambitions, and qualifications, but were unsure how to present themselves effectively for opportunities.

Some had never written a professional CV. Others struggled with cover letters or felt anxious about interviews. Many simply wanted guidance on how to stand out in an increasingly competitive world.

That is why LEAD Sierra Leone hosted the latest edition of the Career Connect Forum, focused on"Job Application Edge: CV, Cover Letter and Interview Mastery."

Led by development professional Emmanuel Tamba Johnny, the session brought together 41 students, graduates, and young professionals for a practical learning experience on building strong CVs, crafting compelling cover letters, preparing for interviews, and positioning themselves for jobs, internships, scholarships, and fellowships.

More importantly, participants left with renewed confidence, valuable insights, and a clearer understanding of what employers and opportunity providers are looking for.

At LEAD Sierra Leone, we believe that talent should never be limited by a lack of access to information, mentorship, or opportunity. The Career Connect Forum was created to bridge that gap and empower young people with the skills and networks they need to succeed.

And this is only the beginning.

We are committed to reaching 500 young people in 2026 through more learning sessions, mentorship opportunities, career resources, and professional development engagements.

To our participants, facilitator, partners, and supporters, thank you for making this session a success.

The journey continues.

EVERY RESTORATION JOURNEY BEGINS WITH UNDERSTANDING THE LAND.

Over the past weeks, our technical team has walked through abandoned mining sites, crossed difficult terrain, recorded coordinates, assessed soil conditions, and listened to community perspectives across the five target communities in Kono District. What we found tells a powerful story one of environmental degradation, but also one of opportunity, resilience, and hope.

Today, we are pleased to announce the successful completion of the land mapping and assessment phase of the Environmental Rescue Project (ERP). This critical milestone has enabled us to identify and document degraded landscapes, assess their restoration potential, and generate the evidence needed to guide the restoration of 500 hectares of mining-affected land.

Behind every coordinate captured and every site assessed was a dedicated team of consultants, project staff, and community representatives working together toward a shared vision: transforming degraded lands into productive ecosystems that support livelihoods and environmental recovery.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the local communities, traditional authorities, landowners, youth, and women representatives whose cooperation and commitment made this process possible. Their knowledge of the land remains invaluable to this journey.

As we close this chapter, we look forward to the next phase, turning data into action, restoring ecosystems, strengthening livelihoods, and building a more resilient future for Kono District.

Special thanks to the Youth4Climate , and Ministero dell'Ambiente e della Sicurezza Energetica for supporting this transformative community-led environmental restoration effort.

The mapping is complete. The restoration begins.

May was a month of growth, learning, and community impact for LEAD Sierra Leone.

From commencing the Environmental Rescue Project (ERP) in Kono District through stakeholder engagement and community authorization meetings, to hosting the May Edition of the Career Connect Forum, where 42 young people gained practical skills in CV writing, cover letters, personal branding, and interview preparation, we continued our commitment to empowering young people and transforming communities.

We also successfully completed the internship placement of two Community Development students from Ernest Bai Koroma University of Science and Technology (EBKUST), providing them with hands-on experience in project implementation, community engagement, and nonprofit management.

These milestones reflect our continued focus on Youth Empowerment & Education, Health, Gender & Social Inclusion, and Environmental Sustainability & Climate Action.

Thank you to our partners, volunteers, community leaders, participants, and supporters who continue to make this work possible.

Together, we are empowering people and transforming communities.

🌱 For me, environmental restoration is more than a projectβ€”it is personal.

Having witnessed firsthand the impact of mining on the fertile lands of Kangama and surrounding communities in Kono District, I understand the urgent need for restoration, sustainable livelihoods, and environmental stewardship.

Through the Environmental Rescue Project, we are working alongside communities to transform degraded landscapes into opportunities for ecological recovery, climate resilience, and sustainable development.

Together, we can restore the land, rebuild livelihoods, and create a greener future for generations to come. 🌱🌍

We extend our sincere gratitude to the Youth4Climate and the Ministero dell'Ambiente e della Sicurezza Energetica for believing in community-led climate action and supporting this transformative effort to restore degraded lands and rebuild hope in Kono District.

FROM DATA TO RESTORATION: THE JOURNEY BEGINS IN KONO

Before restoration comes understanding.

As the Environmental Rescue Project advances across five selected communities in Kono District, the team is currently mapping 500 hectares of degraded land to establish the foundation for effective and sustainable restoration.

Reflecting on the importance of this stage, Project Lead Ibrahim Samuel Turay stated: "Environmental restoration cannot succeed without evidence-based action. Data gathering allows us to understand the true condition of degraded lands, identify the right restoration approaches, and make informed decisions that create long-term environmental impact."

Every point mapped today is a step closer to restoring ecosystems, strengthening community resilience, and building a greener future for Sierra Leone.

The Environmental Rescue Project is funded by Ministero dell'Ambiente e della Sicurezza Energetica and Youth4Climate , supporting youth-led action for environmental restoration and climate resilience.

From assessment to action β€” the restoration journey has officially begun. 🌱

LEAD Sierra Leone has commenced field-level land mapping and soil assessment activities under the Environmental Rescue Project (ERP) across target communities in Kono District.

Our technical field teams are currently conducting GPS mapping, soil quality assessments, land verification, and environmental analysis to guide the restoration of 500 acres of mining-degraded land through sustainable and climate-smart interventions.

This critical phase will help generate the scientific and community-based evidence needed to support effective land restoration planning, ecological recovery, and long-term agricultural sustainability.

Special thanks to Youth4Climate and UNDP Italy for supporting community-driven climate action and environmental restoration efforts in Sierra Leone
