EVERY COMMUNITY HAS A STORY. IN KANGAMA, THAT STORY IS WRITTEN ACROSS THE LAND ITSELF.
For generations, these lands provided livelihoods, supported families, and sustained the community. Over time, however, extensive mining activities transformed much of the landscape, leaving behind degraded land and difficult questions about the future.
As part of the Environmental Rescue Project, LEAD Sierra Leone has spent the past weeks engaging local stakeholders, community leaders, landowners, youth representatives, and residents to better understand both the challenges and aspirations of the people who call Kangama home.
What stood out most during these engagements was not only the concern for the condition of the land, but also the determination of the community to be part of the solution.
Community stakeholders shared powerful reflections on the environmental changes they have witnessed over the years and expressed optimism that through meaningful participation, land mapping, and restoration planning, degraded lands can once again become productive and beneficial for future generations.
Their voices remind us that environmental restoration is not simply about rehabilitating land. It is about restoring opportunity, rebuilding livelihoods, strengthening community ownership, and creating hope where challenges once seemed overwhelming.
The Environmental Rescue Project continues to place communities at the center of every step of the process because lasting restoration can only be achieved when local knowledge, participation, and shared responsibility guide the journey forward.
We extend our sincere appreciation to the people of Kangama for their partnership, commitment, and vision for a greener and more resilient future.
With support from the Youth4Climate and Ministero dell'Ambiente e della Sicurezza Energetica we remain committed to restoring 500 hectares of mining-degraded land across five communities in Kono District.
Restoring ecosystems. Rebuilding livelihoods. Securing the future.
