Today, UNICEF Representative Mariko Kagoshima, the National Chief Education Officer of the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE) and other education officials were at Marian Pre School in Kenema, to see teachers applying skills gained through training supported by the Global Partnership for Education(GPE).

The visit offered an opportunity to observe teaching in the classroom and see how teachers are putting new knowledge and approaches into practice to engage young learners.

From asking questions and encouraging participation to creating an environment where children can learn through interaction and play, the classroom showed why investing in teachers is so important.

Teacher training matters most when the skills gained are translated into everyday classroom practice – helping teachers teach with confidence and giving children better opportunities to participate and learn.

UNICEF remains committed to working with the Government of Sierra Leone partners, including the GPE, to strengthen the capacity of teachers and support .

On World Teachers’ Day, UNICEF Representative Mariko Kagoshima joined, the of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, The Sierra Leone Teaching Service Commission, development partners, teachers and pupils at the 6th Presidential National Best Teacher Awards (PNBTA) in Kenema.

The awards are an important part of the Government’s efforts to recognise and motivate teachers who are at the heart of the country’s Free Quality Education agenda.

Held under the theme, “Standing with Teachers: 60 Years of Protecting the Profession, Advancing Its Status and Shaping Our Futures,” this year’s awards celebrate the dedication, innovation and hard work of teachers across the country.

UNICEF is proud to be among the partners supporting country’s education system and efforts to strengthen the teaching profession.

UNICEF Sierra Leone met with H.E. Mr. Saud Al-Musa’ed, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to Sierra Leone, to discuss shared priorities for children and young people.

The discussion provided an opportunity to welcome Saudi Arabia’s strengthened diplomatic presence in Freetown, recognize the longstanding global partnership between UNICEF and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and explore how deeper cooperation can support Sierra Leone’s human capital development agenda.

Together, we discussed opportunities to strengthen cooperation and advance measurable results for children and young people in Sierra Leone.
UNICEF looks forward to continued dialogue with the Embassy and relevant Saudi institutions to identify practical pathways for partnership in support of children and national development priorities.

Every breath matters.

At Ola During Children’s Hospital in Freetown, reliable medical oxygen is helping health workers respond faster when sick children need lifesaving care.

With support from The Global Fund, UNICEF has supported the Ministry of Health to construct an oxygen plant at the hospital, strengthening access to this essential commodity and helping build a more resilient health system.

Behind the plant are real stories of children receiving the care they need, health workers responding with greater confidence, and families finding hope during some of their most difficult moments.

Supporting the restoration of newborn care in Makeni. 💙

Following the fire incident that destroyed the Special Care Baby Unit at Makeni Regional Hospital, UNICEF, with support from the UK Government through the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), has handed over medical equipment valued at approximately £32,000 to the Ministry of Health, to support the restoration and re-equipping of the unit.

The equipment will help health workers provide specialised care to premature, low-birth-weight and critically ill newborns.

Sierra Leone has made strong progress in expanding specialised newborn care, from 4 Special Care Baby Units in 2017 to 17 across 14 districts today.

The restoration of the SCBU is another step towards ensuring that more newborns have access to the specialised care they need, while supporting families through some of the most critical moments in their child’s life.
