The Day of the African Child is a reminder that children's voices matter.

Today, at the National Children's Conference, children from across Sierra Leone joined Government and partners to discuss an issue that affects their health, education and future: access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene.

Their call was clear: every child deserves clean water, safe sanitation and the opportunity to grow up healthy, safe and with dignity.

UNICEF remains committed to working with partners to turn that vision into reality.

Every child deserves safe water, proper sanitation, and good hygiene.

On the , we celebrate progress in , where access to basic drinking water in rural areas increased from 38.2% in 2010 to 54% in 2022, while urban access rose from 72.9% to nearly 80%.

But more work remains. Between 2020 and 2026, WASH spending averaged less than 1% of government expenditure and only about 0.2% of GDP—far below international commitments and financing targets.

Together, we can accelerate investments and ensure every child has access to the safe water and sanitation services they need to survive, learn, and thrive.

Public budgets are critical to delivering services for children and communities.

The Government of Sierra Leone, together with the International Budget Partnership, Budget Advocacy Network Sierra Leone -BAN, Christian Aid and UNICEF, launched the 2025 Open Budget Survey Report for Sierra Leone.

The latest Open Budget Survey shows positive momentum in public participation and oversight in Sierra Leone’s budgeting process — critical pillars for strengthening accountability and improving service delivery.

The findings also highlight the need to reinvigorate efforts to improve and sustain budget transparency.
Overall, Sierra Leone is making progress, but sustained commitment is needed to ensure that every leone spent works better for children.

🎈 International Day of Play 2026 | Protect Play, Protect Childhood 🎈

Every child deserves a safe place to play. Play is not just fun — it helps children build creativity, confidence, resilience, and lifelong learning skills. 🌱⚽🧩

This , UNICEF Sierra Leone calls for:
✅ Safe and inclusive play spaces
✅ Support for playful parenting

💙 The best childhood memories often begin with a simple moment of play.

Whether it's building sandcastles, sharing laughter with friends, or exploring the world around them, play helps children learn, connect and thrive.

This week, let's recommit to protecting every child's right to play.

, a safe place to play, grow and dream.

🌍💚 This , it’s not just about the planet—it’s about the children who depend on it.

Every clean river, every tree we protect, and every step we take to reduce waste helps shape a healthier, safer world for them. When we care for the environment, we’re giving children the chance to grow, learn, and thrive in communities that support their well-being.

The choices we make today will define the future they inherit. Together, we can build a greener, more resilient world where every child has the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Let’s act—not just for the planet, but for every child who calls it home. 🌱✨

Climate Crisis Is Hitting Children First in Sierra Leone

Floods, rising temperatures and environmental shocks are already disrupting children’s access to water, education and health services.

Children—especially those living in poverty—are the first and hardest hit.
With nearly half the population under 15, investing in climate-resilient systems is critical to protect children’s future.

Children in Sierra Leone deserve to learn in safe, resilient schools—no matter the challenges they face.

That’s why UNICEF Sierra Leone joined MBSSE, NDMA, Save the Children and partners in Freetown to validate the National Education Sector Disaster Risk Management (NESDRM) Strategy.
The focus? Strengthening preparedness and building climate-smart education systems so that children can continue their learning—even during emergencies. 🌍📚💙

By working together, we are helping create safer classrooms, stronger systems, and a future where every child’s right to education is protected.
