It's spooky season, but feeling constantly on edge shouldn't have to be part of your everyday life. 👻

You're not anxious. You're just always slightly on.

That low hum of alertness that follows you from the office to the dinner table to bed? That's not dedication. That's a system that never got told it could stand down.

Singapore's professional life has a particular flavour of this. When availability becomes the measure of how much you care, you stop asking whether the expectation is reasonable and start asking whether you are. The phone isn't the problem. The problem is what your brain now does with silence.

There's a way to stay sharp and high-performing without running a background check on your inbox every 40 minutes. It starts with understanding what's actually happening, rather than simply pushing through it.

Take what's useful, because let's be honest, change doesn't happen just by muting notifications.

Are you READY to help others? 💛

When someone opens up about their struggles, we may not always know what to say or how to respond. But as Dr Geraldine Tan, Principal Psychologist at The Therapy Room Singapore, reminds us, it is important not only to encourage others to share their emotions, but also to be ready to receive them without dismissing or downplaying their feelings.

This was one of the conversations at the post-show panel discussions following The Parting Glass, presented by EMCC in collaboration with Gateway Arts. Our counsellors, fellow mental health practitioners and individuals with lived experience came together to address questions from the audience and share perspectives on supporting ourselves and others.

Sometimes, being there for someone begins with simply listening. And remembering to also receive help yourself 💛

How can we help someone struggling with self-harm? 💛

When someone shares that they are thinking of harming themselves, it can be difficult to know what to say. But as EMCC Counsellor, Thomas Tsang, shares, these conversations are a golden moment to pause, listen and go deeper. Asking direct questions with care can open the door for someone to feel heard and understood.

This was one of the topics explored during the post-show panel discussions following The Parting Glass, presented by EMCC in collaboration with Gateway Arts. Our counsellors, fellow mental health practitioners and individuals with lived experience responded to audience questions and shared their perspectives on supporting those who are struggling.

Sometimes, a personal conversation can make a difference. Let’s not be afraid to reach out and ask.

Netflix's Teach You a Lesson shows two people who carry the same loss, and channel it in completely different directions. One turns his pain into a system built to protect the next child. The other lets his grief anchor him, keeping him honest when anger could easily take over.

In psychology, we call this sublimation: redirecting pain into something that lasts, rather than something that consumes.

But grief doesn't always look productive. Sometimes it's quiet. Sometimes it takes a year to even say the name out loud. Both are valid. Both are grief doing its work.

This week on 📝Between the Lines, we're unpacking how Teach You a Lesson gets grief right, and what it can teach us about our own losses.

Swipe through, and tell us: what has your grief built, or kept you honest about?

Getting up for work or school can feel like dragging a suitcase full of bricks. That’s often what depression looks like in real life, not the dramatic version we see in movies.

Recovery isn’t a switch you flip. It’s gradual, and it starts smaller than you’d think. We broke down what a therapist actually recommends. Swipe through for the full guide.

And remember, you don't walk alone. If you're ready, reach out to enquire/book a counselling appointment with us here: https://emcc.org.sg/counselling/enquiry/

How can we protect ourselves against depression? 💭

Here we share two important reminders: invest in meaningful relationships, and don’t be afraid to seek professional support. Having people we can turn to, alongside access to therapy and other treatments, can make a difference.

As we wrap up this series on the lesser-known aspects of depression, remember: you’re not alone, and support is available💛

Stay tuned for more insights on how we can better support those experiencing depression and other mental health struggles.

On World Mental Health Day, we are encouraged to see Singapore continuing to strengthen its mental health landscape, with growing recognition of the importance of prevention, early intervention, and accessible support. The latest announcement on the future of mental healthcare in Singapore is a positive step towards building a more supportive environment for those who need help.
While specialist care is essential, we also hope to see more people receiving support earlier, before they reach a point of feeling overwhelmed or having to navigate their struggles alone. Sometimes, knowing where to turn, feeling safe enough to open up, or having someone who listens without judgement can make all the difference.
At EMCC, we see how the right support can help individuals, couples, and families navigate difficult seasons and find their footing again. We believe this support should be complemented by greater awareness and understanding, so that seeking help becomes less daunting.
As Health Minister Ong Ye Kung highlighted, reducing stigma remains an important part of this journey. Through EMCC's complimentary public talks and "It’s Not You" mental health advocacy campaign, we hope to play a part in making mental health conversations more open and accessible, including for young people.
We are heartened to see these efforts align with the broader direction Singapore is taking. Building a society where people feel safe to seek help, and can access the right support at the right time, is a shared responsibility. We look forward to working alongside our partners and the wider mental health community to build on this momentum and extend our collective impact.
This World Mental Health Day, we are reminded that every step towards greater understanding, earlier support, and fewer barriers to seeking help brings us closer to a community where no one has to face their struggles alone.

Can you have depression without feeling sad? And what does loneliness really mean? 💭

Depression doesn’t always look like sadness. It can also show up as emptiness, disconnection or a loss of interest in things that once mattered.

And loneliness isn’t simply about being alone. As Dr Muni Winslow shares in this clip, we can experience social loneliness when we lack a wider network, or emotional loneliness when we lack a close relationship with someone who truly knows us and whom we can rely on. We can have many relationships and still feel deeply disconnected.

In this clip from the NEXLeaders Fireside Chat, Dr Muni Winslow explores these often-overlooked aspects of depression, in response to questions from the audience.

On World Mental Health Day, we’re reminded to know the signs and check in on our loved ones. Sometimes, feeling known, heard and cared for can matter more than we realise.

❤️‍🩹If you’d like to help make support for those struggling with their mental health more accessible, you can contribute to EMCC’s Hope Is at Hand Subsidy Fund, which provides subsidised counselling for individuals and families who may otherwise struggle to access professional support.

We've just wrapped up Gottman Clinical Training Level 3, an advanced three-day training designed to help practitioners refine their clinical judgement and apply the Gottman Method with greater precision and confidence.

Led by Trish Purnell-Webb, Certified Gottman Therapist, the training focused on applying the Method to real clinical situations. Participants worked through case studies and role plays, presented their own cases for discussion, and explored specific questions and challenges arising from their couples work.
The opportunity to examine different cases and interventions in depth provided practitioners with practical perspectives they can bring into their work with couples.

Thank you to Trish for sharing your expertise and clinical experience, and to all the participants for your thoughtful engagement throughout the training.

We wish everyone the very best in their continued work with couples and in putting these learnings into practice!

Depression can look and feel different from what we expect. Sometimes, the things we experience alongside depression may seem contradictory, and that’s why it’s worth looking beyond the commonly known signs.

In this clip from the NEXLeaders Fireside Chat, Dr Muni Winslow explores whether gratitude and depression can coexist, in response to a question from the audience.

The webinar was moderated by EMCC Executive Director, Ms Elaine Tan, and we’ll be sharing more thought-provoking questions and insights from the conversation in this series on the lesser-known aspects of depression.

Stay tuned for the next one!
