Åsa Wirling, visual artist and light designer for more than 30 years. She paints with oil as well as with light and has done work both in public spaces and private venues. Åsa describes her expression as strongly visual and feels that putting it into written words defeats its purpose and is superfluous at best. She believes paintings and art should be seen and experienced, not abstractly described, an opportunity which presents itself during Malmö Open Studios.

7. untitled (self portrait), acrylic on chipboard, 32 x 22 cm, 2025

Samuel Klauninger’s paintings move between the everyday and the quietly surreal. Drawing on traditional genres like landscape and interior, his work blends classical composition with expressive distortion, emotional ambiguity, and personal symbolism. Rooted in the folk art tradition, he works on a small scale with easily accessible materials, letting conditions and circumstance shape the outcome. Figures and memory-like scenes appear in charged color palettes—often reflecting the Nordic seasons and urban alienation. His visual language is raw yet deliberate; each painting becomes a space for reflection, myth, and quiet confrontation.

Rebecca Jansson (b. 1993) is based in Malmö and holds an MFA from Malmö Art Academy (2023). In her work, Jansson weaves together personal or found stories with the fascination she holds for small gestures and details, as well as the intimate interaction between artwork and its audience. She frequently works with fragmented storytelling as a method for producing meaning through pencil drawings in combination with sculptural elements and installations. She has participated in exhibitions at Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien (Berlin, DE), Closing Soon (Athens, GR), Helle Knudsen Gallery (Stockholm, SE), Steinsland Berliner (Stockholm, SE), and Arnstedt Gallery (Östra Karup, SE), and has recently spent two months at an artist residency in Paris, at Cité Internationale des Arts (Paris, FR).

9. ”Vi har en riktning, en sprucken plan”, maple and birch wood, 60x50x15 cm, 2023

Hanna Una Holmquist primarily works with sculpture and animation in wood and clay. In the wood sculptures, the choice of carving material has become increasingly important—not only in terms of its material properties but also its origin as a tree and its unique role within an ecosystem. At the center is often the relationship between the material and the subject of the sculpture, where the history of the material may stand in contrast to the shape of the sculpture. Their art often touches on how bodies and nature change, adapt, or resist—a kind of poetic tenderness for what remains, a desire to hold on to, to hold and embrace.

His work usually departs from an exploration of the urban space, where everyday life melts together with fantasy books and old magazines.

Pierre Sandgren is a painter inspired by the beauty of the unnatural world and the boredom of everyday life. His works do not understand natural color, form and the relationship between darkness, sharp, bright light and the void. His paintings are often very unimaginative, unoriginal and simple depictions of the world around us and certainly not an expression of Sandgren’s non-existent emotional and spiritual connection to the supernatural world. Through his works he does not hope to evoke a sense of wonder and awe, and he hates the idea of inviting the viewer to contemplate the beauty and complexity of the world around us. So if you like them, you can form a club for bad taste with Pierre Sandgren – membership is free, but self-criticism costs extra.

Petra Lilja is an artist, designer, researcher (PhD), and curator based in Malmö. Her artistic practice centers on hands-on explorations with local clays, mineral pigments, and industrial residues, resulting in sculptural objects and installations. Working slowly and intuitively in the studio, she engages with materials as active collaborators, exploring themes of environmental change, extractivism, and more-than-human relations. Through form, texture, and process, her work invites reflection on how art and design can shift dominant narratives and offer alternative ways of relating to the world. She has curated exhibitions such as The Future is Handmade and previously ran her own gallery in Malmö.

Nan Embäck works with painting and sculpture. Her artistic practice explores the ambivalence of living and relating to others, both people and objects. Nan Embäck’s art reflects on the tension between the strange and the familiar, and how these two emotional states though seemingly opposite can exist in close proximity. She has exhibited at Galleri Ping-Pong, Alta Art Space, Malmö Konsthall, and Kunstnernes Hus (NO), among others. Upcoming solo exhibition at Gallery PS, Gothenburg, 2026.

An odyssey into the ordinary takes the work of Michael Johansson from oversized kit-form to condensed and concentrated geometric units, forcing function into submission with notions of colour and shape. From serious to humorous, Johansson has made a series of works where found objects within the same colour range are reconstructed into a homogeneous image of a fictional life reinforced by our collective imaginary: the compressed scenery from a time gone by. The newfound rigid order separates the objects from their usage, and invites us to a shared space where the familiar meets the unfamiliar. Engaging with this concept in the public space, the viewer is confronted with a situation that could both be perceived as either a very odd incident or as something carefully put together.
