New research has found microplastic pollution in deep-sea hydrothermal vent ecosystems more than 2,000 metres below the ocean surface. Scientists detected microplastics in over 90% of sampled deep-sea molluscs, showing that plastic pollution has reached even the most isolated areas of the planet.

The findings highlight that plastic pollution is not only a waste problem, it is also a chemical pollution issue. As plastics break down and spread through ecosystems, they can carry hazardous additives and create new pathways for exposure across marine food webs. Preventing plastic pollution at the source is essential to protect ecosystems and human health.
