Today, we celebrate Global Surgery Day and renew our shared dedication to improve safe, timely, and accessible surgical care for all.

Global Surgery includes more than just the operating room. It includes workforce development, education, research, health systems, and advocacy—all of which collaborate to enhance surgical treatment and enhance patient outcomes globally.

The SCSD Global Surgery Lab is happy to contribute to this purpose through research, cooperation, and innovation focused at creating stronger and more robust surgical systems.

On this Global Surgery Day, we honor the commitment of healthcare professionals, researchers, educators, and activists working toward a future in which access to safe surgical care is not limited by geography or situation.

Because better surgical systems result in healthier communities and safer futures.

As part of the ongoing *Surgeons in Conflict Zones* series, the IASSS Talks Portfolio, in collaboration with IASSS Sudan and SCSD, proudly presents *Sudan Edition* — a powerful and deeply human discussion highlighting the realities of surgical practice and medical research amidst conflict.

🧱This series aims to provide a platform for surgeons and healthcare professionals working in areas affected by war and humanitarian crises to share their stories, challenges, and experiences from the frontlines of healthcare.

🇸🇩 In this special edition, surgeons from Sudan will discuss their firsthand experiences navigating the immense professional, ethical, and personal challenges of delivering surgical care in resource-limited and unstable environments.

⛑️ From operating under pressure and adapting to disrupted healthcare systems, to continuing academic work and research despite extraordinary circumstances, this webinar seeks to shed light on the resilience, innovation, and dedication of healthcare professionals serving their communities in times of crisis.

✨Beyond medicine, this conversation is an opportunity to listen, learn, and reflect on the role of surgeons and researchers during humanitarian emergencies, while amplifying voices that are too often unheard.

Join us for an inspiring and thought-provoking session exploring surgery, science, resilience, and humanity in the face of conflict.

Every safe surgery requires a competent surgeon who is not just knowledgeable, but also competent enough to act safely and confidently when it counts the most.

In our most recent Journal Club webinar, we discussed findings from the SURGEON I Study, which used national expert opinion to establish required surgical competencies for medical graduates in Sudan before entering Housemanship. The conversation focused on how competency-based, structured training might enhance preparedness, enhance patient safety, and promote more uniform surgical education across institutions.

We appreciate everyone who attended and made contributions to this important discussion about the future of surgical training.

You can now access the full recording on YouTube and explore the discussion in detail.
