Not All Skills Are Equal: Some Must Be Mastered Independently!

Competency in surgical training is a spectrum instead of a single milestone. While certain abilities necessitate careful supervision, others are required for safe independent practice from the start.

The SURGEON Study I emphasizes this distinction by distinguishing which competences medical graduates should be able to accomplish on their own and which require supervision during early clinical exposure. This strategy strikes a compromise between patient safety, gradual skill development, and clinical readiness.

Building competent and self-assured future surgeons requires clear expectations upon graduation.

Stay tuned for our Journal Club, where we'll discuss how these competency levels were determined and what they represent for surgical education reform.

The Reality Check.

From Classroom to Frontline Care: Are Graduates Really Prepared?

The move from medical school to clinical practice is one of the most important stages in a doctor's career. In many contexts, newly graduated doctors are rapidly placed in positions where they must assess, manage, and make choices for surgical patients, frequently with without supervision.

This reality poses an essential question: are we actually providing graduates with the skills they require for safe and effective practice from the start?
SURGEON Study I addresses this difficulty by creating a nationally agreed-upon set of fundamental surgical competences for Sudanese medical graduates.
In order to improve surgical results and health systems overall, it is fundamental that this transition process be strengthened.

Stay tuned for our Journal Club, where we will discuss the data supporting this concept and what it implies for surgical education in the future.

Before the First Incisionโ€™.

What Should Every Medical Graduate Know Prior to Entering the Operating Room?

Entering the operating room is a watershed point in a doctor's career, requiring not only knowledge but also skill, responsibility, and a commitment to patient safety.

The SURGEON Study I tackles this by developing a nationally agreed-upon set of essential surgical competences that medical graduates in Sudan should possess prior to beginning surgical internship | housemanship. From clinical evaluation and decision-making to essential procedural skills and professional communication, these competencies seek to educate graduates to participate safely and effectively from the start.

To improve surgical results and create robust healthcare systems, these pillars must be strengthened.

Are you curious about what it means to be a Day-1 ready doctor? Stay tuned for our upcoming Journal Club, which will take you inside the structure.

From Inequality to Action: Rethinking Surgical Access.

Approximately 5 billion individuals do not have access to safe surgery. What are we going to do about it?

Access to prompt, safe surgical care continues to be one of the most urgent global health issues. The Lancet Commission on Global Surgery reports that billions of people worldwide still lack access to necessary surgical procedures, especially in low- and middle-income countries.

The first step toward closing this gap is to improve medical education. The SURGEON Study I emphasizes the significance of establishing precise, competency-based standards to guarantee that recently graduated physicians are equipped to provide safe and efficient surgical care from the outset of their employment.

Investing in healthcare professionals is the first step towards improving surgical results.

Keep an eye out for our next Journal Club, where we will go into greater detail about these discoveries.

We are proud to share that the Academic & Professional Development Department at the Sudanese Consortium for Surgical Development has achieved a remarkable milestone โ€”

๐ŸŽ‰ Three abstracts accepted for presentation at the AMEE Conference 2026 in Vienna, Austria.

This achievement reflects not only academic excellence, but the real impact of our programs on surgical education in Sudan.

The accepted abstracts highlight key areas of our work:

โ€ข Online research training and its role in building the next generation of surgical researchers in Sudan โ€” showcasing how accessible education can shape future leaders in research.

โ€ข Supporting surgical residents during conflict through innovative online learning approaches โ€” addressing critical gaps in training continuity during the war.

โ€ข Scaling Quality Improvement & Clinical Audit training through a multi-cohort national program โ€” demonstrating how structured education can translate into better clinical practice and patient outcomes.

These are not just research topics โ€” they are programs we designed, implemented, and evaluated, turning education into measurable impact.

From workshopsโ€ฆ to practiceโ€ฆ to global recognition.

This is the power of combining education, research, and system-focused thinking.

We are incredibly proud of our team and all contributors who made this possible โ€” and even more excited about what lies ahead.

Providing equitable access to surgical care is a critical component of global health. But creating a sustainable surgical workforce calls for more than just infrastructure and regulations; it starts with future medical professionals' awareness, education, and involvement.

In this cross-sectional study conducted at the University of Khartoum Faculty of Medicine in Khartoum, Sudan, we looked at medical students' awareness, perceptions, and career goals regarding global surgery. The findings highlight a key gap: whereas formal exposure to global surgery is low, student interest is high and strongly impacted by past experience in the subject.

Interestingly, the students who had learned about global surgery were far more like to say they would wish to work in the field. However, significant obstacles still exist, such as a lack of mentorship and unclear career

These results highlight a crucial point: including global surgery into undergraduate medical education is crucial for producing the next generation of surgeons and promoting health equity in settings with limited resources.

A thorough summary of the study's conclusions and their consequences for medical education and workforce development is given in this carousel.

Not every dream is about becoming a surgeon.

Some dreams are bigger.

Dr. Awab Osman shares his journey with the Sudanese Consortium for Surgical Development โ€” a journey that goes beyond clinical training to building the skills, knowledge, and networks needed to transform surgical care in Sudan.

Because being a surgeon is not just about operating.
Itโ€™s about leading, improving systems, and creating lasting impact.

Over the past years, SCSD has been a space for growth โ€” where ambition meets opportunity, and where future leaders are shaped.

If you have a vision to become more than just a clinicianโ€ฆ
If you want to contribute to something bigger than yourselfโ€ฆ
