كلمة تتكرر كثيراً في المركز النسوي بحي السوق الشعبي هذه الأيام.

وصلت الماكينات الثماني، وجلست خمس عشرة امرأة خلفها لأول مرة بعد أسبوعين من الورق والمقص. الخط الأول يخرج معوجاً في كل مرة. فتقف المدربة عند الطاولة، وتفكّ الخيط، وتنتظر حتى يخرج مستقيماً.

والماكينات تبقى في المركز بعد أن ينتهي المشروع.

دورة الخياطة والتفصيل ضمن مشروع «جدران ومهارات وغرفة آمنة»، تنفيذ جي أرتستك في كسلا بتمويل من المفوضية السامية للأمم المتحدة لشؤون اللاجئين.

Do it again.

That is the sentence you hear most at the women's centre in Al-Souq Al-Shaaby this week.

The eight machines arrived, and fifteen women sat behind them for the first time after two weeks of paper and shears. The first line always comes out crooked. So the trainer stops at the table, pulls the thread out, and waits until it runs straight.

The machines stay at the centre after the project ends.

The sewing and tailoring course is part of Walls, Skills, and a Safe Room, delivered by G.Artistic in Kassala with funding from UNHCR.

القلابات وصلت الكرامة 3.

مع أول يوم جفّت فيه الطرقات بعد المطر، بدأت ترحيلات الردميات إلى المقاطع التي اختارتها لجنة المعسكر في الكرامة 3 بإقليم النيل الأزرق: الممرات التي يغرق فيها الطين حتى الركبة كل خريف، ولا يمرّ منها لا طفل إلى مدرسته ولا مريض إلى العيادة.

الردم يسبق الحمامات. الطريق أولاً حتى تمرّ منه مواد البناء، ثم تُبنى كتل الحمامات على المواقع نفسها التي حددها الأهالي.

The tipper trucks have reached Al Karama 3.

On the first dry day after the rain, road fill started arriving at the sections chosen by the camp committee in Al Karama 3, Blue Nile Region: the passages that turn to knee-deep mud every rainy season, where no child gets to school and no patient gets to the clinic.

Fill comes before latrines. The road first, so building materials can move, then the latrine blocks go up on the sites the residents themselves selected.

بدأت العروض المسرحية التفاعلية في معسكري الكرامة 10 والكرامة 3 بإقليم النيل الأزرق.

خمس مجموعات من شباب المعسكرين، تدرّبوا على المسرح التفاعلي وكتبوا مشاهدهم بأنفسهم، يقفون الآن أمام جيرانهم في الساحات بين المآوي. المشهد يتوقف حين يرفع أحد من الجمهور يده، ويصعد ليغيّر ما يراه خطأ. لا خشبة ولا تذاكر، الأرض هي المسرح والحيّ كله هو الجمهور.

الموضوعات التي تُعرض: الأوراق الثبوتية والحقوق المدنية، الكوليرا والضنك، النظافة الشخصية، ختان الإناث، والعنف ضد المرأة.

The interactive theatre performances have started in Al Karama 10 and Al Karama 3 camps, Blue Nile Region.

Five groups of young people from the camps, trained in forum theatre and writing their own scenes, now perform for their neighbours in the open spaces between the shelters. When someone in the audience raises a hand, the scene stops and they step in to change what they think is wrong. No stage, no tickets. The ground is the theatre and the whole block is the audience.

The plays cover identity documents and civil rights, cholera and dengue, personal hygiene, female ge***al mutilation, and violence against women.

بدأت في الخامس من سبتمبر، وما زالت مستمرة.

دورة خياطة وتفصيل في المركز النسوي بحي السوق الشعبي، المربع 4 بكسلا. خمس عشرة امرأة، واثنان وعشرون يوماً تدريبياً، وستة أيام في الأسبوع.

وحتى اليوم لم تلمس واحدة منهن ماكينة.

الأسبوعان الأولان للورق. أخذ المقاس، ورسم الباترون، وقصّه، وتجربته على الجسم، ثم نقله إلى القماش. من بدأ من الماكينة بدأ من النهاية، لأن الماكينة تخيط ما قُصّ، وإن كان القص خطأ لم تصلحه.

القطع التي في الصور خيطت باليد، من قماش وقصاصات. والمرأة التي تمسك باترونها الورقي في الصورة الأولى، تمسك في التي بعدها الفستان الذي خرج منه.

الماكينات الثماني تأتي في المرحلة القادمة، وهي يدوية لا كهربائية. الكهرباء هنا تنقطع، ومن تعلّمت على ماكينة كهربائية ستنتظر التيار كي تعمل. وتبقى الماكينات في المركز بعد أن ينتهي المشروع، لأننا لم نشترها لدورة، بل لحي.

في نهاية سبتمبر تتخرج المشاركات، ومع كل واحدة حقيبة عدتها: مقص، ومتر، وإبر، وطباشير، وحزمة قماش تبدأ بها.

اخترناهن على معايير: النزوح، وإعالة أسرة، والحاجة. الدخل في بيت لا دخل فيه ليس رفاهية، بل ما يُبعد الأسرة عن قرار تتخذه من ضيق، وأوله تزويج بنت صغيرة.

الدورة جزء من مشروع «جدران ومهارات وغرفة آمنة»، ينفّذه فريق جي أرتستك في كسلا بتمويل من المفوضية السامية للأمم المتحدة لشؤون اللاجئين.

It started on 5 September, and it is still running.

A sewing and tailoring course at the women's centre in Al-Souq Al-Shaaby, Block 4, Kassala. Fifteen women, twenty-two training days, six days a week.

And so far not one of them has touched a machine.

The first two weeks belong to paper. Taking the measurement, drafting the pattern, cutting it, testing it against the body, then transferring it to cloth. Start at the machine and you have started at the end, because the machine stitches what has already been cut, and if the cut was wrong it cannot fix it.

The pieces in these photographs were sewn by hand, from cloth and offcuts. The woman holding her paper pattern in the first picture is holding, in the next one, the dress that came out of it.

The eight machines come in the next stage, and they are manual, not electric. The power here cuts out, and a woman trained on an electric machine will sit waiting for the current before she can work. The machines stay at the centre after the project ends, because we did not buy them for a course. We bought them for a neighbourhood.

At the end of September the participants graduate, each with her kit: shears, a tape measure, needles, chalk, and a bundle of fabric to start with.

They were selected against criteria: displacement, supporting a household, need. Income in a house with none is not a luxury. It is what keeps a family from a decision made under pressure, and the first of those is marrying off a young daughter.

The course is part of Walls, Skills, and a Safe Room, delivered by the G.Artistic team in Kassala with funding from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

عشرون رجلاً وامرأة من معسكري الكرامة 3 والكرامة 10 أمضوا خمسة أيام في مكتبنا بالدمازين، وخرجوا بخمس مسرحيات كتبوها بأنفسهم.

لم نسلّمهم نصوصاً جاهزة ليحفظوها. بدأنا بالارتجال، ثم بنينا الشخصيات، ثم جلسنا معهم على المعرفة التي تحتاجها الرسالة حتى تكون صحيحة: كيف تنتقل الكوليرا وكيف تُتقى، وكيف يُسجَّل المولود وما الأوراق التي يحتاجها النازح، وحماية النساء والفتيات، ومناهضة ختان الإناث، والإبلاغ عن الاستغلال وكيف يُقدَّم البلاغ.

انقسموا إلى خمس مجموعات، واختاروا أدوارهم، وكتبوا باللهجة التي يتحدث بها جيرانهم.

المسرح التفاعلي لا ينتهي بانتهاء المشهد. الجمهور يوقف الممثل، ويصعد مكانه، ويجرب نهاية أخرى. لذلك اخترناه: الرسالة التي تخرج من داخل المعسكر تصل أسرع من الرسالة التي تأتي إليه.

العروض تبدأ داخل المعسكرين قريباً.

Twenty women and men from Al Karama 3 and Al Karama 10 camps spent five days at our office in Ed Damazin and came out with five plays they wrote themselves.

We did not hand them a script to memorise. We started with improvisation, built the characters, then sat with them over the knowledge a message needs to be accurate: how cholera spreads and how to stop it, how a birth is registered and which papers a displaced family needs, protection of women and girls, ending female ge***al mutilation, and how to report exploitation.

They split into five groups, chose their own roles, and wrote in the dialect their neighbours speak.

Interactive theatre does not end when the scene ends. The audience stops the actor, takes his place, and tries a different ending. That is why we chose it: a message that comes out of the camp travels faster than one carried into it.

Performances begin inside both camps soon.

خمسة أيام في المركز النسوي بالسوق الشعبي، المربع 4، بكسلا.

أنهت لجنة شبكة الحماية المجتمعية تدريباً متقدماً من 22 إلى 26 أغسطس. ولم يكن تأسيساً لشيء جديد. اللجنة قائمة، ولها في الحي وجه يعرفه الناس، وما احتاجته ليس أن نعلّمها معنى الحماية، بل أن نضع في يدها أدوات أدق: مفاهيم العنف القائم على النوع الاجتماعي، ومسارات الإحالة الآمنة، ومبادئ التعامل مع الناجيات، وأدوات الرصد التي تحمي بيانات النساء.

والخطوة التالية ليست شهادة تُعلَّق على جدار.

كل عضو في اللجنة يبدأ الآن جلسات توعية في البيوت وفي المركز، حتى نصل إلى ثلاثمائة امرأة. ومع كل جلسة بطاقة تحمل مسار الإحالة: إلى أين تذهب امرأة تعرّضت للأذى، ومن تسأل، وأي رقم تتصل به. لأن أصعب ما في الأمر ليس أن تعرف المرأة أن ما جرى لها خطأ، بل أن تعرف الباب الذي تطرقه.

هذه أولى خطوات مشروع "جدران ومهارات وغرفة آمنة"، الذي ينفّذه فريق جي أرتستك في كسلا بتمويل من المفوضية السامية للأمم المتحدة لشؤون اللاجئين. ثلاثة مسارات: تدريب لجنة الحماية وجلسات التوعية التي تليها، ودورة خياطة 22 يوماً لخمس عشرة امرأة مع ثماني ماكينات تبقى في المركز، وجداريتان ويوم مفتوح. 335 امرأة وفتاة بشكل مباشر، ونحو ألفي شخص عبر الحملة الفنية.

نرسم على جدران شرق السودان منذ 2019، وأنجزنا أكثر من 350 جدارية. تعلّمنا أن الجدار يقول ما لا تقوله المحاضرة، وأن المهارة التي تُدرّ دخلاً تحمي أكثر مما تحمي النصيحة.

Five days at the women's centre in Al-Souq Al-Shaaby, Block 4, Kassala.

The Protection Network Committee completed an advanced training course from 22 to 26 August. Nothing was founded here. The committee already existed, with a face the neighbourhood knows, and what it needed was not a lesson in what protection means. It needed sharper tools: the concepts and forms of gender-based violence, safe referral pathways, the principles of working with survivors, and monitoring methods that protect women's data.

What comes next is not a certificate on a wall.

Every committee member now begins awareness sessions in households and at the centre, until around three hundred women have been reached. Each session carries a referral card: where a woman who has been harmed can go, who she asks, what number she calls. The hardest part is rarely knowing that what happened was wrong. It is knowing which door to knock on.

This is the first step of Walls, Skills, and a Safe Room, delivered by the G.Artistic team in Kassala with funding from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. Three streams: the committee training and the awareness sessions that follow, a 22-day sewing course for fifteen women with eight manual machines that stay at the centre, and two murals with an open day. 335 women and girls directly, around 2,000 people through the arts campaign.

We have been painting walls across eastern Sudan since 2019, more than 350 murals so far. Those years taught us that a wall says what a lecture cannot, and that a skill which earns money protects better than advice.

خمسة عشر متطوعاً ميدانياً من منظمة جي أرتستك أنهوا ثلاثة أيام من التدريب على الحماية من الاستغلال والانتهاك الجنسيين والصون، في قاعة التدريب بمكتبنا في الدمازين، من 12 إلى 14 أغسطس 2026.

ثمانية رجال وسبع نساء. ثلاثة أيام على المبادئ الستة الأساسية، ومدونة السلوك، وقنوات الإبلاغ الأربع، ومسارات الإحالة، وحماية الطفل، وحماية البيانات وأذونات التصوير.

في اليوم الأخير وقّع كل مشارك تعهد مدونة السلوك. لا أحد منهم يدخل معسكر الكرامة 3 أو الكرامة 10 قبل هذا التوقيع. المساعدة التي نقدمها مجانية دائماً وغير مشروطة بأي شيء، ومن حق أي إنسان أن يبلّغ إن حدث غير ذلك.

هذه أولى أنشطة مشروع «قبل الأمطار»، استجابة طوارئ وقائية متكاملة في معسكري الكرامة 3 والكرامة 10 بالدمازين، تجمع المياه والإصحاح والنظافة والمسرح التفاعلي في خط واحد قبل ذروة الخريف. وبدأناه من هنا، بأنفسنا، لأن من يحمي الناس يجب أن يكون مؤهلاً قبل أن يصل إليهم.

Fifteen G.Artistic field volunteers completed three days of PSEA and safeguarding training at our Ed Damazin office, 12 to 14 August 2026.

Eight men and seven women. Three days on the six core principles, the Code of Conduct, the four reporting channels, referral pathways, child safeguarding, and data protection and photo consent.

On the final day every participant signed the Code of Conduct. None of them enters Al Karama 3 or Al Karama 10 without that signature. Our assistance is always free and never conditional on anything, and anyone has the right to report if it ever isn't.

This is the first activity of Before the Rains, an integrated preventive emergency response in the Al Karama 3 and Al Karama 10 camps in Ed Damazin, bringing water, sanitation, hygiene, and interactive theatre together ahead of the peak of the rains. We started with ourselves, because the people who protect others should be trained before they arrive.

من اختيار المبادرة، إلى امتلاك أدوات إدارتها.

على مدى ثلاثة أيام، جمعت منظمة جي آرتستك ممثلي مجتمعي أم قلجة وأبو النجا في ورشة الحوكمة، ضمن مشروع ابتكار مجتمعي لصمود المجتمعات في القضارف، بالشراكة مع المنظمة النرويجية للمساعدات الشعبية (NPA) وبدعم من الوكالة النرويجية للتعاون الإنمائي (Norad).

بعد أن اختار كل مجتمع مبادرته، جاءت هذه الورشة لتزوّد المشاركين بأسس الحوكمة التي تجعل المبادرة تدوم: كيف تُكوَّن لجنة مجتمعية تديرها، وكيف يُصاغ ميثاق مكتوب يحكمها، وقواعد الإدارة المالية الشفافة والصيانة والملكية الجماعية. وعلى هدي ما تعلّموه، ستُشكّل المجتمعات لجانها لاحقاً وفق أسس حوكمة سليمة، لأن المبادرة لا تكتمل بتنفيذها وحده، بل بوجود من يحملها ويصونها بعد رحيل المشروع.

وقد شرّفت افتتاح الورشة الأستاذة آسيا عبد الرحمن حسين، مدير عام وزارة الرعاية والتنمية الاجتماعية بولاية القضارف، والأستاذة نبيلة يحيى، نائب المدير التنفيذي لمحلية وسط القضارف، في حضور يعكس التنسيق بين المنظمة والجهات الحكومية دعماً للمبادرات المجتمعية.

ومن الأثر الذي لمسه المشاركون أن مهارات الحوكمة التي اكتسبوها رصيد دائم لمجتمعاتهم، يعينهم على إدارة شؤونهم المشتركة بروح من الشفافية والمسؤولية، بما يعزز التعايش ويقي من النزاعات. وهذا هو جوهر عملنا: أن تصمم المجتمعات حلولها، وتقودها، وتملكها.

ونتقدم بالشكر لمفوضية العون الإنساني بولاية القضارف، ووزارة الرعاية والتنمية الاجتماعية، ومحلية وسط القضارف، على تنسيقهم ودعمهم المتواصل الذي أسهم في إنجاح هذه المرحلة.

From choosing the initiative, to owning the tools to manage it.

Over three days, G.Artistic Organization brought together representatives of the Um Galja and Abu Al-Naja communities in the Governance Workshop, part of the "Community-Led Innovation for Community Resilience in Gedaref" project, in partnership with Norwegian People's Aid (NPA) and with support from the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad).

After each community had chosen its initiative, this workshop equipped participants with the governance foundations that make an initiative last: how to form a community committee to manage it, how to draft a written charter to govern it, and the rules of transparent financial management, maintenance, and collective ownership. Guided by what they learned, the communities will form their committees in the coming period on sound governance foundations, because an initiative is not complete through implementation alone, but through having those who carry it and sustain it long after the project ends.

The opening was honoured by the presence of Ms. Asia Abdel Rahman Hassan, Director General of the Ministry of Social Welfare and Development in Gedaref State, and Ms. Nabila Yahya, Deputy Executive Director of Central Gedaref Locality, in an attendance that reflects the coordination between the organization and government bodies in support of community initiatives.

One effect participants noted is that the governance skills they gained are a lasting asset for their communities, helping them manage their shared affairs with transparency and responsibility, strengthening coexistence and helping prevent disputes. This is the essence of our work: that communities design their solutions, lead them, and own them.

We extend our thanks to the Humanitarian Aid Commission in Gedaref State, the Ministry of Social Welfare and Development, and Central Gedaref Locality for their coordination and continued support, which contributed to the success of this phase.

ثماني جداريات، وحائطان في كل قرية يحكيان قصة أهلها.

ضمن مشروع ابتكار مجتمعي لصمود المجتمعات في القضارف، بالشراكة مع المنظمة النرويجية للمساعدات الشعبية (NPA) وبدعم من الوكالة النرويجية للتعاون الإنمائي (Norad)، نفّذت منظمة جي آرتستك ثماني جداريات توعوية في منطقتي أم قلجة وأبو النجا، بواقع أربع جداريات في كل منطقة.

لم نختر موضوعات الجداريات من عندنا. كل جدارية تحمل رسالة نبعت من القضية التي اختارها المجتمع نفسه. في أم قلجة، حيث اختار الأهالي المياه أولوية، رسمنا عن وصول الماء لكل بيت، وعن المحافظة على نظافته، وعن أن البئر أمانة نحملها جميعاً. وفي أبو النجا، حيث اختار المجتمع التعليم، رسمنا عن حق كل طفل في مقعد دراسي، وعن الطريق الآمن إلى المدرسة، وعن أن ما نبنيه بأيدينا نحفظه بأيدينا.

الجداريات ليست زينة على جدار. هي رسائل يفهمها الطفل قبل الكبير، تبقى بعد رحيل المشروع، وتذكّر كل من يمر بها أن هذه القضية اختارها أهل المكان، وأن حلّها مسؤولية الجميع.

منظمة جي آرتستك بدأت عام 2019 مجموعة جداريات تطوعية في القضارف، ونفّذت منذ ذلك الحين أكثر من 350 جدارية مجتمعية. ونؤمن أن الفن حين ينبع من المجتمع، يصبح صوتاً له لا مجرد لون على حائط.

Eight murals, and in each village two walls that tell the story of their people.

As part of the "Community-Led Innovation for Community Resilience in Gedaref" project, in partnership with Norwegian People's Aid (NPA) and with support from the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad), G.Artistic Organization painted eight awareness murals across Um Galja and Abu Al-Naja, four in each area.

We did not choose the themes ourselves. Each mural carries a message that grew from the issue the community itself had chosen. In Um Galja, where people chose water as their priority, we painted about water reaching every home, about keeping it clean, and about the well being a trust we all carry. In Abu Al-Naja, where the community chose education, we painted about every child's right to a seat, about the safe road to school, and about how what we build with our own hands, we protect with our own hands.

These murals are not decoration on a wall. They are messages a child understands before an adult, they remain after the project ends, and they remind everyone who passes that this issue was chosen by the people of the place, and that solving it is everyone's responsibility.

G.Artistic began in 2019 as a volunteer mural collective in Gedaref, and has since created more than 350 community murals. We believe that when art grows from the community, it becomes its voice, not just colour on a wall.

أربعة وثمانون صوتاً، وأولوية واحدة: التعليم.

في إطار مشروع "ابتكار مجتمعي لصمود المجتمعات في القضارف"، بالشراكة مع المنظمة النرويجية للمساعدات الشعبية (NPA) وبدعم من الوكالة النرويجية للتعاون الإنمائي (Norad)، عاد فريق منظمة جي أرتستك إلى منطقة أبو النجا بمحلية وسط القضارف في جلسة تحقق مجتمعي.

بعد الهاكاثون الذي اختار فيه المجتمع أولوياته، عدنا نعرض المخرجات على نطاق أوسع من السكان. حضر الجلسة أربعة وثمانون مشاركاً من تجمعات المنطقة كافة (A وB وC وD) ومن المجتمع المضيف والنازحين، بينهم النساء والشباب وكبار السن والأشخاص ذوو الإعاقة.

وأكد المجتمع اختياره: التعليم أولاً، ثم الصحة. تحدث معلمون عن فصول يجلس فيها مئة وخمسة عشر طالباً بلا مقاعد كافية، وعن أطفال يتعلمون تحت ظل الشجر، وعن منطقة بلا مدرسة ثانوية يضطر أبناؤها للانقطاع بعد الأساس. صوتٌ واحد، خرج من أهل المكان أنفسهم.

هذه هي طريقتنا: المجتمعات لا تتلقى الحلول، بل تصممها وتقودها. والقضية التي يختارها الناس بأنفسهم هي القضية التي يحمونها بعد رحيل المشروع.

Eighty-four voices, one priority: education.

As part of the "Community-Led Innovation for Community Resilience in Gedaref" project, in partnership with Norwegian People's Aid (NPA) and with support from the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad), the G.Artistic team returned to Abu Al-Naja in Central Gedaref Locality for a community verification session.

After the hackathon where the community chose its priorities, we came back to test those outcomes with a wider group of residents. Eighty-four participants attended, from all of the area's community groups (A, B, C, and D) and from the host community and displaced people, among them women, youth, elders, and persons with disabilities.

And the community confirmed its choice: education first, then health. Teachers spoke of classrooms holding one hundred and fifteen students without enough seats, of children learning under the shade of a tree, and of an area with no secondary school, where children are forced to drop out after primary. One voice, coming from the people of the place themselves.

This is how we work. Communities do not receive solutions; they design and lead them. And the issue people choose for themselves is the issue they protect long after the project ends.
