To mobilize society and states, produce knowledge and develop innovative projects.

Promote the legal recognition of a Stable Climate as a Common Heritage of Humankind and the basis for the restoration of the well-functioning of the Earth System. Common Home of Humanity is a novel initiative conceived in 2016 in recognition of the enormous governance challenge that global interdependence poses to human societies in their efforts to ensure a sustainable future for humankind.

Within a truly global, inter and trans-disciplinary effort, the Common Home of Humanity works to build a global transformative movement to create the needed structural conditions for a collective action for our civilization to safeguard a well-functioning Earth System. The mission of the Common Home of Humanity is to contribute to build a new global governance system for humanity based on the legal recognition of a well-defined well-functioning Earth System as an Intangible Common Heritage of Humankind. This new object of International Law should be the basis around which the relations of interdependence that emerge from the shared use of a unique and highly interconnected Earth System at a global scale are organized, producing cascading effects on health, economy, social justice and international relations.

A UTAD, o ICNF e Common Home of Humanity (Casa Comum da Humanidade) unem-se para reforçar a recuperação da floresta autóctone

A Universidade de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (UTAD), o Instituto da Conservação da Natureza e das Florestas, I.P. (ICNF) e a Casa Comum da Humanidade assinaram no dia 15 de outubro 2026, um Protocolo de Colaboração no âmbito do projeto “Nossas Sementes, Nossas Árvores”, uma iniciativa que pretende contribuir para a valorização e recuperação dos ecossistemas florestais portugueses através da utilização de espécies autóctones. REN e VINCI Energies Portugal associam-se à iniciativa.

A cerimónia decorreu na UTAD e contou com a presença do Reitor da Universidade, Professor Doutor João Pereira Barroso, da Diretora Regional do Norte do ICNF, Arq.ª Sandra Sarmento, e do Diretor Executivo da Casa Comum da Humanidade, Doutor Paulo Magalhães.

O protocolo estabelece uma colaboração orientada para o desenvolvimento de estudos, avaliações e ações destinadas a aumentar a disponibilidade e a diversidade de sementes para a produção de árvores e arbustos autóctones. Neste contexto, o projeto “Nossas Sementes, Nossas Árvores” prevê a recolha de material vegetal de espécies florestais autóctones relevantes em Portugal, a sua reprodução e o respetivo acompanhamento científico.

At , CHH also participated in the session “Governing an Overheated Planet: Climate Change, Environmental Justice, and the Future of Multilateral Cooperation”, with the Paper “CLEAR Carbon Legacy and Ecosystem Activity Restoration”.

The Executive Director Paulo Magalhães was Chair of the session: “Green Deals and Global Strain: Navigating Energy Diplomacy, Climate Litigation, and Geopolitical Fragmentation”.

Participate at was a great opportunity to reinforce the collaboration with Article 109º Coalition that CHH recently joined as a member to support a stronger, fairer and more inclusive international system for the future.

At , CHH Executive Director Paulo Magalhães was invited to participate at the Plenary Session “ACUNS Holmes Lecture: Challenges and Opportunities for Development”, to debate the keynote speaker Ms. Kitty Van Der Heijden, United Nations United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
At this roundtable Paulo Magalhães shared the debate with Professor Stephen Marks, O.P. Jindal University and Professor Alice Odingo, University of Nairobi, moderated by Professor Ai Kihara-Hunt, Special Rapporteur, UN Human Rights Council.

The Common Home of Humanity participated in this year´s Annual Meeting of ACUNS, the Academic Council on the United Nations System, entitled “Multilateralism under Challenge and the Future of the Pact”.
From 1-3 July, this Annual Meeting - https://acuns.org/2026-annual-meeting-2/ - in Lisbon, Portugal, intended to critically assess the UN system’s capacity to facilitate multilateral cooperation and reflect on its performance since the last comprehensive UN system-wide reform effort, the UN60 World Summit in 2005.

The CHH Roundtable on “Bringing the Functional Aspect of the Planet to International Law” was chaired by Sara Moreno Pires (CHH and University of Aveiro) with the participation of Augusto Lopez-Claros (Global Governance Forum), Viriato Soromenho-Marques (University of Lisbon), Paulo Magalhães (CHH), and Cristiane Derani (Director of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, Brazil). The discussion highlighted the need to rethink international law and global governance and reconsider a stable climate within safe and just boundaries as a new legal object of multilateral governance.

The second roundtable on “Reforming Multilateralism by Reforming the UN” was chaired by Sara Moreno Pires (CHH and University of Aveiro), having as invited speakers Paulo Magalhães (CHH); Augusto Lopez-Claros (Global Governance Forum) and Sofía García (Article 109º Coalition). This roundtable has addressed the current threats to multilateralism, from the resurgence of nationalism, rejection of the rules that enable peaceful coexistence between nations or climate change.
