🔥 It only takes 15 minutes of your time to make a real difference to the non-governmental heritage sector in Europe! We warmly encourage organisations operating in the third sector in Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden to participate in the survey conducted as part of the ‘Mapping the Non-Governmental Heritage Sector in North and Western Europe’ project (2026–2027).

💬 The survey is available in all the countries' official languages. The data collected will improve our understanding of the size, diversity and needs of the sector, and will inform the planning and implementation of future actions at a European level.

🔥 Work on the report Mapping of the North and Western European Non-Governmental Heritage Sector, scheduled for publication in 2027, is in full swing! Lisa Albrecht, an art historian specialising in architectural heritage, is one of our national facilitators from Germany, with whom we are collaborating on the project.

🎓 She is particularly interested in the relationship between society and architectural heritage, and the role it plays in contemporary social conflicts. While studying, Lisa gained practical experience in museum curation and historic preservation. She is currently developing her doctoral project, which focuses on perspectives in the sociology of architecture and space with a particular emphasis on empirical research into modern architecture and urban planning.

Jedną z naszych krajowych facylitatorek z Niemiec, z którą współpracujemy przy realizacji projektu, jest Lisa Albrecht, historyczka sztuki specjalizująca się w dziedzictwie architektonicznym.

🎓 Jej szczególnym obszarem zainteresowań jest relacja społeczeństwa z dziedzictwem architektonicznym oraz rola, jaką odgrywa ono we współczesnych konfliktach społecznych. Równolegle do studiów Lisa Albrecht zdobywała praktyczne doświadczenie w kuratorstwie muzealnym i ochronie zabytków. 🙌 We are delighted to announce that one our facilitators from Germany is Meetali Gupta! We look forward to working with her, as her extensive international experience in heritage conservation, social practice and public policy-making will be invaluable to the process of mapping the third sector along the Rhine, Elbe and Weser. The data provided by the researcher and her support in connecting our team with selected individuals and organisations – representatives of the non-governmental sector in Germany – will enable us to conduct group and individual interviews, followed by in-depth analyses. This will enable us to present the fullest possible picture of the third sector, its condition and the challenges it faces in Northern and Western Europe.

🎉 Meetali Gupta currently works as a teaching assistant in the Department of Environmental Planning at BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg. Her experience includes working as an architect-researcher at the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (Intach), a research assistant at the organisation “Safetipin”, and a cultural heritage consultant on interdisciplinary projects. She made a significant contribution to a monitoring project documenting and assessing the destruction of cultural heritage in Ukraine, carried out in collaboration with “Blue Shield Germany” and Philipps-Universität Marburg. She also served as a cultural heritage specialist at the organisation “European Historic Houses” in Brussels.

✨ Miło nam poinformować, że naszą facylitatorką z Niemiec - jedną z trzech - jest Meetali Gupta! Cieszymy się na współpracę, ponieważ jej bogate międzynarodowe doświadczenie w obszarze ochrony dziedzictwa, praktyki społecznej i tworzenia polityk publicznych będzie niezwykle cenne dla procesu mapowania trzeciego sektora nad Renem, Łabą i Wezerą. Dostarczane przez badaczkę dane oraz jej wsparcie w sieciowaniu naszego zespołu z wybranymi osobami i organizacjami – przedstawicielami sektora pozarządowego w Niemczech – umożliwią przeprowadzenie wywiadów grupowych i indywidualnych, a następnie dokonanie pogłębionych analiz. 📢 The Narrative Heritage Network, launched at the end of 2025 by the Europa Nostra Heritage Hub in Kraków, the 2026 season opened on Wednesday 29 April with an online workshop session on the use of sound in heritage hosted by John Beauchamp, an audio professional and sonic heritage researcher.

🎙️ The meeting was attended by representatives of NGOs and cultural heritage organisations from across Europe, most notably from the CEE region. The main presentation highlighted four case studies – museums and heritage sites – from across the EU, looking at the utility of sound as well as good and bad practices in incorporating sound-based artefacts in exhibitions and other heritage activities.

Following the introductory talk, participants had a chance to raise their case studies and discuss audio projects which they had incorporated into their programmes. The meeting generated a productive and friendly exchange of ideas and know-how, with discussions including sound in educational projects, the reception of sound installations and the use of audio guides.

👃 April’s meeting is the first of four planned for 2026, with the next online gathering planned for 10 June, which will revolve around smell and olfactory heritage.

📢 Sieć Narrative Heritage Network, powołana pod koniec 2025 roku przez Europa Nostra Heritage Hub w Krakowie, zainaugurowała tegoroczny sezon w środę 29 kwietnia warsztatami online poświęconymi roli dźwięku w dziedzictwie kulturowym. Spotkanie poprowadził John Beauchamp – radiowiec, producent audio i badacz dziedzictwa dźwiękowego.

🎙️ W wydarzeniu wzięli udział przedstawiciele organizacji pozarządowych i instytucji ochrony dziedzictwa z całego kontynentu, szczególnie z regionu Europy Środkowo‑Wschodniej. W głównej części omówiono cztery studia przypadku – muzea i miejsca dziedzictwa z różnych krajów Unii Europejskiej – pokazujące, jak wykorzystywać dźwięk oraz jakie są dobre i złe praktyki wprowadzania artefaktów audio do wystaw i innych działań. Po wprowadzeniu uczestnicy opowiedzieli o projektach dźwiękowych realizowanych w swoich instytucjach. Spotkanie stało się okazją do żywej, rzeczowej wymiany wiedzy i dobrych praktyk, m.in. na temat roli dźwięku w projektach edukacyjnych, odbioru instalacji dźwiękowych oraz stosowania audioprzewodników.

👃 Kwietniowe wydarzenie było pierwszym z czterech zaplanowanych na 2026 rok. Następne spotkanie odbędzie się online 10 czerwca i będzie poświęcone zapachowi i dziedzictwu olfaktorycznemu. Już dzisiaj serdecznie zapraszamy do udziału: więcej szczegółów zdradzimy już wkrótce!

🧺 Basketry is one of seven Polish traditions inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. We share in the joy with Serfenta and all Polish basket weavers! The tradition is thriving, successfully weaving the past into the present through modern workshops, educational programmes and collaborations between craftspeople, designers and cultural and business institutions in Poland and across Europe.

🪢 The Cieszyn-based association Serfenta plays a key role here, having revitalised Polish basketry for over 18 years. Drawing on its experience and expertise, Serfenta supported the preparation of the successful application for the inclusion of 'Basketry Traditions' on the List. Notably, Serfenta is one of only three organisations in Poland accredited by UNESCO, and its “Model for the Revitalisation of Craftsmanship” won the 2023 European Heritage Award / Europa Nostra Award in the “Education, Training and Skills” category.

👜 Plecionkarstwo w Polsce to jedna z siedmiu polskich tradycji, które zostały wpisane Listę reprezentatywną niematerialnego dziedzictwa kulturowego ludzkości UNESCO! Współdzielimy radość z Serfenta oraz wszystkimi polskimi plecionkarzami i plecionkarkami! Plecionkarstwo w Polsce żyje i z sukcesem wyplata przeszłość w teraźniejszości poprzez nowoczesne warsztaty, programy edukacyjne, współpracę między rzemieślnikami, projektantami i instytucjami kultury oraz biznesu w Polsce i Europie.

🪢 Ważną rolę odgrywa tu cieszyńskie stowarzyszenie Serfenta, które od ponad 18 lat rewitalizuje polskie rzemiosło plecionkarskie. Swoim doświadczeniem i wiedzą wsparło ono przygotowanie zwycięskiego wniosku o wpis „Tradycji plecionkarskich” na Listę. Przypomnijmy, że Serfenta jest jedną z trzech organizacji w Polsce akredytowanych przy UNESCO, a jej „Model rewitalizacji rzemiosła” został laureatem Nagrody Dziedzictwa Europejskiego / Nagrody Europa Nostra 2023 w kategorii „Edukacja, szkolenia i umiejętności”.

🔵 One of our national facilitators working on the project 'Mapping the Non-Governmental Heritage Sector in North and Western Europe' is Alicja Peszkowska, an anthropologist, researcher and participation strategist based in Copenhagen. She has worked with public institutions, including the Danish National Gallery, as well as international bodies such as the European Commission and grassroots non-profit organisations in Europe and beyond. She has many years of experience in community building and engagement, communication, narrative development, PR, and organisational strategy.

🟦 Her support in connecting our team members with individuals and organisations representing the non-governmental sector in Denmark will enable us to conduct group and individual interviews and carry out in-depth analyses. This will give us a better understanding of the role of this sector in protecting and promoting cultural heritage across the region!

📢 Following your overwhelming interest and support, it is our pleasure to announce that we have organised four meetings of the Narrative Heritage Network throughout 2026. Launched at the end of 2025, the Narrative Heritage Network aims to bring together practitioners in the field of storytelling, whether they be artists, producers, curators, or other heritage professionals working to make the story of heritage come alive – intangible or tangible.

💬 The meetings will last for 90 mins each, kicking off with an introductory 10-15 minute talk and then moving onto a workshop format. We cordially invite all interested parties to our first meeting of 2026, which will be held online on Wednesday 29 April at 1330 CEST. For our first meeting we will be discussing sound in museums and heritage sites. As these meetings are also designed for you as a space for discussion, please may we ask you to think about a case study from your organisation/institution/practice which involves sound and how it can (or can’t) be incorporated into your activities.

🏭 Blower Hall (Gebléishal) in Esch-sur-Alzette, Luxembourg, is a monumental hall dating from 1910. It is one of the most important reminders of the country’s industrial past, and was once at the heart of steel production. It is situated within the UNESCO Minett Biosphere Reserve. Despite being granted national heritage status in 2000, the hall has been closed since 2019 due to serious structural damage. The non-governmental organisation Centre national de la culture industrielle - CNCI is playing a key role in saving the site, continuing the earlier efforts of the Amicale des Hauts Fourneaux and Eise Stol associations. The CNCI is conducting campaigns, research and activities aimed at protecting and reusing the hall.

⚙️ The CNCI is developing a concept to transform the Blower Hall into a sustainable, multifunctional centre for innovation, entrepreneurship, culture, education and tourism. This centre will be closely linked to the University of Luxembourg campus and the government’s “Cité des Sciences” project. The organisation aims to give the site international standing and showcase how industrial heritage can be adapted to combine preservation with the social regeneration of the city.

🏗️ The site has been included among the seven most endangered cultural heritage sites in Europe as part of the current edition of Europa Nostra's “7 Most Endangered” programme, run in collaboration with the EIB Institutenstitute.

Mimo objęcia ochroną państwową w 2000 r., hala od 2019 r. pozostaje zamknięta z powodu poważnemu uszkodzeniu konstrukcji. Kluczową rolę w ratowaniu obiektu odgrywa organizacja pozarządowa „Centre national de la culture industrielle” (CNCI), która - kontynuując wcześniejsze wysiłki stowarzyszeń Amicale des Hauts Fourneaux i Eise Stol - prowadzi kampanie, badania i działania na rzecz jego ochrony i ponownego wykorzystania.

⚙️ CNCI opracowuje koncepcję przekształcenia Blower Hall w zrównoważone, wielofunkcyjne centrum innowacji, przedsiębiorczości, kultury, edukacji i turystyki, ściśle powiązane z kampusem Uniwersytetu Luksemburskiego i rządowym projektem „Cité des Sciences”. Organizacja chce nadać obiektowi międzynarodową rangę i uczynić go modelowym przykładem tego, jak dzięki adaptacji dziedzictwa przemysłowego można łączyć jego ochronę z nowoczesną, społeczną rewitalizacją miasta.

🏗️ Obiekt znalazł się wśród siedmiu najbardziej zagrożonych obiektów dziedzictwa kulturowego Europy w ramach bieżącej edycji programu prowadzonego przez Europa Nostra we współpracy z Instytutem Europejskiego Banku Inwestycyjnego - ,,7 Most Endangered".

✨ We are delighted to introduce our country facilitator from Luxembourg, David Castrillo. An architect and cultural heritage specialist, he is certified by ICCROM in the field of post-crisis recovery of heritage sites and has gained international experience through projects in Spain, Greece, Cyprus and Luxembourg. His participation in the “Mapping the Non-Governmental Heritage Sector in North and Western Europe” project will improve our understanding of the nature and challenges of the third sector in Luxembourg. His extensive collaboration with institutions such as the Department of Antiquities and the Department of Urban Planning in Cyprus, the Leventis Foundation, the Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου | University Of Cyprus, UNDP, Europa Nostra and the EIB Institute will be invaluable in helping to build networks and conduct in-depth analyses of the role of non-governmental organisations in protecting and promoting cultural heritage in the region.

🕵️‍♀️ David is the head of the ‘Between the Lines’ architectural practice, which specialises in traditional architecture, heritage protection, and the conservation of historic buildings in Europe. The studio undertakes projects aimed at documenting, assessing the state of preservation of, and restoring, sites ranging from Roman settlements to medieval castles, as well as conducting urban planning studies of historic village centres and the first archaeological park in Nicosia. Sacred monuments, particularly Byzantine and Orthodox ones, occupy a special place in his work.

🏗️ As the initiator of innovative research programmes, including ‘EarthMasonry’ (concerning the development of compressed earth blocks, or CEBs), which he has carried out with the University of Cyprus, David combines traditional craftsmanship with modern technologies and a sustainable approach to building materials. He also curated the exhibition “Cypriot Traditional Architecture: Preservation of Vernacular Heritage' at Neumünster Abbey in Luxembourg to promote the importance of regional architecture and intangible heritage.

Szczególne miejsce w jego pracy zajmują zabytki sakralne, zwłaszcza bizantyjskie i prawosławne.

Był także kuratorem wystawy „Cypriot Traditional Architecture: Preservation of Vernacular Heritage” w opactwie Neumünster w Luksemburgu, promującej znaczenie architektury regionalnej i dziedzictwa niematerialnego.

📘 Wyniki synergii naszych działań przedstawimy w raporcie „Mapping of the North and Western European Non-Governmental Heritage Sector”, którego publikacja jest zaplanowana na 2027 rok.
