Hermandad de la Macarena (Oficial)

🔵 Yesterday afternoon, the Basilica of Santa Maria de la Esperanza Macarena lived a very special moment with the visit of our sister Geraldine Roman Batista, ex-senator of the Philippines.

During the meeting, we had the honor of receiving two beautiful paintings donated by her:

🖼️ A delicate portrait of the Virgin of Hope on mother of pearl.

🖼️ A work of the Immaculate Conception, Patroness of the Philippines, intended to complete our Hispanic Replica. It shows the evangelization of the archipelago and the historical union between Spain and the Philippines.

The pieces were blessed by our spiritual director, Fr. Jose Maria Losada Lahera, who raised a special prayer for both countries and remembered the first Filipino saints.

The act also featured the presence of the consul, Don José Ignacio Bidón and Vigil de Quiñones. With this encounter, we strengthen the deep ties that unite us with the Macarenos hispanic -Asians who, on the other side of the world, worship with immense devotion to the Blessed Virgin of Hope.

Roderick Macutay

The Philippine flag was first unfurled and held by General Emilio Aguinaldo in Cavite Nuevo (present-day Cavite City).

Following the victory against Spanish forces at the Battle of Alapan in Imus, Cavite, on May 28, 1898, captured Spanish prisoners of war were brought to the Teatro Caviteño in Cavite City. It was at this location that Aguinaldo proudly displayed and raised the national flag to the gathered public.

Historically, this exact moment on May 28 is celebrated annually as National Flag Day. Just a few weeks later, on June 12, 1898, the very same flag was formally raised at the Aguinaldo window residence in Kawit, Cavite, during the official proclamation of Philippine independence but it was Attorney Ambrosio Rianzares Bautista who formally raised the flag, not Aguinaldo as seen in some artworks.

The flag waved that afternoon was designed by Aguinaldo and sewn in Hong Kong by Marcela Agoncillo, her daughter Lorenza, and Delfina Herbosa de Natividad.

Silaw Artist Collective

MANA at NCCA: Raul Jorolan is a Filipino visual artist whose practice bridges fine art, advertising, and visual storytelling. With a career spanning multiple creative disciplines he brings a dynamic, narrative-driven sensibility to his paintings.

Guided by an explorative ethos, Jorolan’s work reflects a fusion of figurative imagery, pop culture, and urban experience, resulting in compositions that are both playful and layered with meaning.

Within an ecological lens, Jorolan’s work can be understood as a reflection of urban ecosystems in flux. Through his vibrant, narrative compositions, he reveals an ecology shaped not only by nature, but by cities, stories, and shifting cultural landscapes, inviting viewers to reconsider their place within these evolving environments.
