‼️NEWS UPDATE: MSC HERMES III CREW RESCUED; VESSEL ADRIFTS IN SOUTH CHINA SEA
September 23, 2026

All 25 crew members aboard container ship MSC Hermes III were safely rescued yesterday after abandoning vessel in the South China Sea, approximately 300 km east of Vietnam. Nearby sister ship MSC Ruby recovered the entire crew without injury; MSC Florentina and MSC Turin III also assisted in the operation.

The Liberia-flagged vessel remains afloat but unmanned and drifting; no confirmation on whether fire or mechanical failure prompted the evacuation. Navigational warnings have been issued through September 25. Salvage and investigation are pending.

President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. on Sunday said they are trying to talk to countries in war not to bomb ships with Filipino seafarers.

He expressed concern about the rising number of casualties within Filipino seafarers as wars continue in some parts of the world.

"The new danger now are our seafarers. Kasi doon tayo nagkakaroon ng casualty eh," he said.

"Kapag inatake ‘yung isang tanker, isang barko, malamang may Pilipino doon. So the chances of a Filipino becoming a casualty getting hurt or getting killed is very much there.
