Today, October 14, marks the birth anniversary of Judge Manases Gutierrez Reyes. Born in 1915 in Ibaan, Batangas, he served as a Captain and commander of the "Manases Reyes Company" under the guerrilla Ibaan Regiment during World War II, later becoming its Regimental Personnel Officer (S-1) and Acting Regimental Commander.

After the war, he practiced as an independent attorney in Ibaan before moving to Mindanao during the post-war migration wave.

He went on to serve as the presiding Judge of the Court of First Instance (CFI) of Davao. He passed away in Matina, Davao City on October 6, 1969, at the age of 55.

His family continued in public service; his daughter is retired Court of Appeals Justice Agnes Reyes-Carpio, and his namesake grandson is lawyer Manases "Mans" Reyes Carpio, the husband of Vice President Sara Duterte.
