June 12, 2026

The Philippine Group of Law Librarians, Inc. (PGLL) joins the nation in commemorating the 128th Anniversary of Philippine Independence. On this historic day, we honor the courage, patriotism, and sacrifices of the Filipino people whose unwavering struggle for freedom paved the way for the birth of our nation.

It has been 128 years since the Filipino revolutionary government led by Emilio Aguinaldo proclaimed the independence of the Philippines from Spanish rule in Aguinaldo Shrine on June 12, 1898. Independence Day was celebrated until 1901 when the First Philippine Republic came to an end. Following the international recognition of Philippine independence, the celebration was observed on July 4 from 1946 to 1964. Through Republic Act No. 4166, June 12 was restored as the official Independence Day of the Philippines.

As law librarians and information professionals, we remain committed to preserving our legal and historical heritage, promoting access to information, and supporting an informed citizenry that values freedom, democracy, and the rule of law.

The Philippine Group of Law Librarians, Inc. (PGLL) joins the nation in celebrating Judiciary Month this June as the Philippines commemorates the 125th anniversary of the Supreme Court of the Philippines.

Pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 1265, s. 2026, government agencies, local government units, private institutions, and civil society organizations are encouraged to participate in and support this significant month-long observance.

Established on June 11, 1901 through Act No. 136 of the Philippine Commission, the Supreme Court has long served as a steadfast guardian of justice and the rule of law. From the leadership of its first Chief Justice, Cayetano Arellano, to the present day, the Court has played a vital role in upholding constitutional governance and protecting the rights of the Filipino people.

As the Court marks this historic milestone, it carries the theme, “SC: 125 Years of Tradition and Innovation,” reflecting its rich judicial heritage and its continuing pursuit of excellence, integrity, and innovation in the administration of justice.

As partners in advancing legal research, access to legal information, and the preservation of the country's legal heritage, the members of PGLL honor the Supreme Court's enduring legacy and reaffirm their support for a judiciary that remains responsive to the evolving needs of society.

We all know that libraries are repositories of knowledge, but they are also spaces of learning, dialogue, and belonging. This Pride Month, we celebrate diversity and reaffirm our commitment to creating inclusive environments where every individual feels welcomed, respected, and empowered.

May we create spaces where every person feels seen, valued, and free to be themselves.

As gateways to information and understanding, libraries play an important role in promoting empathy, supporting equal access to knowledge, and amplifying diverse voices and experiences. Together, let us continue building library spaces that reflect the richness of our communities and uphold the dignity of every person.

The Philippine Group of Law Librarians (PGLL) deeply mourns the passing of Prof. Myrna S. Feliciano, a true pillar of the UP College of Law and Philippine legal education.

As one of the country’s pioneering lawyer-librarians and the founding President and co-founder of PGLL, Prof. Feliciano devoted her life to the advancement of the legal profession and legal scholarship.

Armed with degrees from the University of the Philippines, the University of Washington, and Harvard Law School, she served with distinction as UP Law Librarian, Associate Dean of the UP Law Center, and a respected leader who helped shape modern Philippine legal practice through her contributions to legal citation standards, professional ethics, and judicial training.

Beyond her remarkable achievements, Prof. Feliciano’s enduring legacy lives on in the countless students, lawyers, librarians, and legal professionals she mentored with wisdom, dedication, and compassion. Even after her retirement, she remained a guiding light and inspiration to the legal and library community.

We extend our deepest sympathies to her family, colleagues, former students, and loved ones during this time of mourning. While she will be greatly missed, her invaluable contributions and lasting influence will continue to inspire generations to come.

May she rest in eternal peace.
