Is it actually safe to live on a hillside? Right now, we don’t really know.

Living on a hillside doesn’t guarantee you’re on solid ground. Families are looking for a home on one side, while developers are cutting the same hills for new projects on the other. It’s a risky situation. It only takes one heavy typhoon or a sudden tremor for these slopes to give way.

We’ve seen the headlines before, and we can’t afford to let another family be lost to the next landslide.
Cebu needs real solutions more than awareness. We need actual engineering, better planning, and technology to keep these hillsides steady.

This isn’t just for engineers or urban planners. If you have a solution, this is a challenge for anyone ready to build a safer Cebu.

Cebu is no stranger to flooding. Every typhoon season, the same story unfolds. Communities flood, families are evacuated, and lives are upended. The waters may recede, but the damage they leave behind lingers for months, sometimes years.

Flood displacement in Cebu is not a one-time event. It’s a recurring tragedy that robs families of the things that matter the most: a home, a livelihood, a future. Those in low-lying areas, informal settlements, and coastal communities are left to carry the weight of it all.

Typhoon Tino made that painfully clear. But Tino was not the first, and without a real solution in place, it will not be the last.

Relief helps. But it is not enough. Cebu needs solutions that address the root, not just the aftermath.
