πŸŒŠπŸ’‘ ka-h-ALAM-an # 6 | did you know oceans produce oxygen?

Scientists estimate that oceans produce more than half of Earth’s oxygen! Tiny ocean plants called phytoplankton release oxygen as part of photosynthesis, just like trees on land. This means our seas are the planet’s largest lungs, breathing life into the air we breathe every day.

While oceans give us this vital gift, they also need our care. Pollution and warming waters threaten these oxygen-makersβ€”so protecting our oceans is truly protecting our own future. Truly, the same waters that feed us also keep us alive! πŸ’§βœ¨

THE RARE JEWEL OF THE SULU FORESTS!

Meet the 𝑺𝒖𝒍𝒖 π‘―π’π’“π’π’ƒπ’Šπ’π’ β€” one of the rarest hornbills in the world and a remarkable bird found only in the Philippines!

Scientifically known as π•¬π–“π–™π–π–—π–†π–ˆπ–”π–ˆπ–Šπ–—π–”π–˜ π–’π–”π–“π–™π–†π–“π–Ž, this critically endangered hornbill is endemic to the Sulu Archipelago. It inhabits lowland forests, where it depends on mature trees for food, shelter, and nesting. Its striking black plumage, white tail, and prominent casque make it one of the most distinctive birds in its range.

Sadly, the Sulu Hornbill faces serious threats from habitat loss, forest degradation, and hunting. As its remaining forest habitat continues to disappear, this rare species is pushed closer to extinction. Protecting the forests of the Sulu Archipelago and safeguarding its remaining populations are essential to giving this unique Philippine bird a chance to survive.

It’s a favorite on every Filipino table – from savory Sinigang na Hito, crispy Prito, to hearty Nilaga. It feeds many families and supports local livelihoods of fish farmers and fisherfolk. It’s also tough and adaptable, showing how resilient our native water resources can be.

This freshwater gem isn’t just food – it’s proof of the rich life that grows in our own waters! πŸ’§βœ¨
