Furrever Home Friday 💙

"We got Danny (now Rizzo) from you a few months back. She's finally settling in with us now and loves pats. Her and the gray/white kitten we already had have been best friends from day 1. They are very sweet together."

📣 Puppies Before Profit – Bring in Breeder Laws! 📣

Today, we’re launching our Puppies Before Profit campaign, to raise awareness around New Zealand’s lack of dog breeding legislation and to build support for law reforms.

Currently, we’re FAR behind other countries when it comes to dog breeding laws. In New Zealand:

🐾 Anyone can breed and sell puppies
🐾 There are no restrictions on the number of breeding dogs a person can keep
🐾 There are no minimum supervision levels
🐾 There are no minimum or maximum ages for breeding
🐾 There are no maximum number of litters across a dog’s lifetime
🐾 There are no restrictions on close inbreeding.

Despite the current lack of specific rules, our recently commissioned survey found that 96% of New Zealanders think dog breeding should be regulated.

This isn’t a niche animal welfare issue. It’s something that New Zealanders deeply care about. We need clear, enforceable standards that apply to all breeders, and ensure every breeding dog receives appropriate care ❤️

The Whanganui SPCA is looking to expand our reach and make support more accessible for people and pets in our more isolated communities 🐾

Our Community Support Officer, Cyprus, is hoping to connect with local communities to organise pop-up support days at places like town halls, Marae, and community spaces throughout the region.

These visits would include support like:
🐶 Pet food drop-offs
🐱 Flea and worm treatments
🐾 Advice and support around animal care
✂️ Help with desexing assistance

Our goal is to make support more accessible, build stronger community connections, and help keep pets happy, healthy, and with the people who love them.

If you think your community, Marae, or local area could benefit from a visit, we’d love to hear from you! Please get in touch with Cyprus at [email protected] to chat further 😊

Dog owners! Do you need advice on trimming your pet's nails? 🐕️ We know it can sometimes be a daunting task, and many dogs (and owners!) are nervous when it comes to getting this done.

We've created a helpful guide explaining how to know if your dog's nails need trimming, important things to be aware of, and when to seek veterinary advice ❤️ Understanding the anatomy of the dog's nail is crucial in ensuring you can do this safely (avoiding the inner 'quick'), while keeping your dog happy and healthy.

Check out the detailed guide on our website, and please share this to help other dog owners in the community: https://www.spca.nz/advice-and-welfare/article/trimming-your-dogs-nails

🐾 Thank You, Whanganui! 🐾

A huge thank you to everyone who stopped by the Whanganui SPCA stall at the River Markets this weekend! A special mention to the Markets for providing us with the stall space free of charge. 💙

We loved chatting with so many people about fostering and answering all your wonderful questions. Whether you were curious about fostering dogs, small animals, or farm animals, it was fantastic to see so much interest in helping animals in need. 💚

Thank you as well to everyone who had a go at guessing the number of dog treats in the jar, suggested names for our future adoptable pets, and made donations to support the animals in our care. Every conversation, donation, and show of support helps us continue the work we do.

A very special thank you goes to our furry ambassadors Daisy, Bonnie, and Jasper, who were on their very best behaviour and helped demonstrate just how rewarding fostering can be. And of course, thank you to their wonderful foster families for giving up their Saturday and sharing their experiences with potential foster carers.

Now for the moment you've all been waiting for... 🦴

We had someone guess the EXACT number of treats in the jar! 🤯

Scroll to the end to meet our lucky winner! 🎉 We will be in contact with you today!

(Stay tuned for the awesome name suggestions)

Thank you again for making the day such a success. We are so lucky to be part of such a caring and supportive community. 🐾
