Great news! We've been awarded a $5,000 grant from the Greytown Lands Trust, plus a further $2,000 from South Wairarapa Rotary, to refresh and update our trail signage.

As part of this upgrade we're planning more story boards sharing the history of the area, so keep an eye out as the new signs start going in over the coming months.

A huge thank you to our funders for backing this project. Support like this is what keeps the Greytown Trails Trust running.

You may have also spotted our new donation QR codes along the trail to make is super easy to donate. The trail is maintained through donations and volunteers, so we appreciate every single dollar we receive!

Did you spot us in this week's Greytown Grapevine?

We've shared the story of how our trails came to be, from a handful of locals with a big idea back in 2009, to trails that have now clocked over 250,000 visits.

It's also a good look at what's next: the last of our wheelchair and baby buggy gates went in this August, meaning the full length of the Rail Trail is now accessible to all, and we're exploring a long-term plan to create a full loop around Greytown by joining Woodside Station to Kuritawhiti Street.

Did you know nearly 50,000 people use the Rail Trails every single year?

It's a huge number, and it means real wear and tear. Our trails have moved from the original construction phase into ongoing maintenance, and it isn't cheap, resurfacing planned for 2027 alone is estimated at $15,000. The trails don't receive any funding from South Wairarapa District Council, so we rely entirely on community donations to keep them going.

We recently had to remove our physical donation boxes after they were repeatedly damaged and targeted by thieves, so the easiest way to help now is online.

Who are all these friendly looking faces?

They're our new Board of Trustees elected at our recent AGM: John Gray (Chair), Bob Tosswill, Phil Cox, Gary Hall, Shane Atkinson, and new faces Fraser Bell and Roland Daysh. Thank you all for stepping up to look after the trails we love.

With new leadership comes a time to say a heartfelt thank you to those who have paved the way. Tributes were paid to John Bushnell, who has dedicated the last six years to effortlessly guiding the Trust as our Chair. John’s immense contribution and hard work have left an incredible legacy on our tracks, and we owe him a massive debt of gratitude.

Another retiring trustee is Ted Ward who has done so much over the years especially leading the management of the Greytown Country Market, always being available to do work on the trail, and so much more. Whilst Ted is no longer a trustee we know we will still see his smiling face helping out

If you're interested in supporting the trails, we're always looking for keen community minded people! You can volunteer to help with planting and trail maintenance or even help run The Greytown Country Market which is our major fundraising activity (running 3rd Sunday from October to March)

What a way to start your Saturday!

Every Saturday at 8am the Greytown Woodside Trail parkrun and all their awesome parkrunners run, walk and stroll 5km along the lovely Woodside end of the Rail Trail.

Its a friendly, community event, run by a passionate group of volunteers (much like the Greytown Rail Trail crew😁). We love to see them out on the trail making the most of this fantastic community asset!

And now that it's Spring, it's the perfect time to try it out. Go check out their page 🏃‍♀️

All dog owners are reminded to please keep your dogs on leads at all times when using the Greytown Rail Trail.
Neighbouring farmers have newborn lambs and calves at this time of year. They do not need dogs getting through fences into their paddocks and disturbing stock.
