A community workshop in Wānaka with tools, space and support to build, fix and create.

Use our woodworking & sewing spaces, book hands-on workshops, donate used materials, learn or share skills, volunteer & connect! The WCW was developed in 2020 as an inclusive community resource where people can access the tools, materials, learning and physical space necessary for building and repair projects, without having to purchase or rent their own. Members are learning and sharing a range of skills, using the facilities for their own projects, hosting and attend Workshops or simply drop in for a cup of tea and some companionship. Through Wo(Men)Shed and Fabricate members are also volunteering their time or skills, to create things for the Upper Clutha Community
Volunteer hours are Tuesday and Thursday mornings 9.00-12.30, its a great time to pop in and check us out.

Some toys are worth holding onto. 🧸🔨

We often have toys arrive at the Workshop needing a little care and attention and sometimes they’ve already been part of a family for generations.

Our volunteers love bringing these old favourites back to life, but they’re also busy making toys for a whole new generation.

Using clean upcycled timber, aircraft, trucks and carts are currently taking shape in the Workshop ready for Christmas. 🎄

Simple, sturdy wooden toys designed to last and who knows, perhaps one of them will become a family favourite passed down for generations too.

Want to grow more of your own food at home? 🌱🥕

We’re excited to be supporting KiwiHarvest Queenstown & Central Lakes, a new KiwiHarvest community programme helping local households get set up to successfully grow fresh food at home.

Successful participants receive a complete modular vegetable garden, made predominantly from rescued and donated materials, along with compost, starter seedlings, frost protection, a self-watering system and support from an experienced local gardening mentor through their first growing season.

And you don’t need gardening experience – the programme is specifically designed to make growing food more accessible, whether you're a beginner, renting, short on space or simply want to grow more at home.

🌱 No cost for successful participants
♻️ Around 95% rescued, reused or upcycled materials
🥬 Everything you need to get growing with gardening support

Some very small new residents are getting some very small new homes. 🦎🏠

Our wood workshop volunteers recently delivered a couple of purpose-built little houses to a preschool in Hāwea, ready to provide a home for local geckos and skinks. How cute!

Working with people experienced in protecting our native lizards, the team created a design with reinforced entrances to help keep predators out and removable roofs so the kids can occasionally take a peek at what's happening inside.

Well… we tackled the fabric mountain! 🧵🙌

A huge thank you to everyone who came along to our recent Fabric Treasure Trove Working Bee and helped bring a little order to the Sewing Room.

There was a LOT to get through. 😅

Thanks to some very willing hands, donated fabric was sorted, measured, folded and bundled so it's much easier to see what we have and put it to good use.

It's one of those behind-the-scenes jobs that makes a huge difference to a shared community space, and we're very grateful to everyone who gave up their time to help. 💙

Our Sewing Room continues to grow, and we'd love to build an even bigger community of people around it. Whether you're keen on sewing, helping with community projects, sorting materials or lending a hand at the occasional working bee, there are plenty of ways to get involved. The next lot of Beginner Sewing Classes start early October also!

A little more comfort for the Hāwea–Albert Town trail. 🚲🐕

A few more WCW creations have headed out into the community – this time along the cycle track between Hāwea and Albert Town.

Our volunteers have installed a couple of seats overlooking the standing wave on the Hāwea River, giving walkers and riders somewhere to stop, stretch their legs and watch the action.

And nearby, there's something for the four-legged trail users too..another WCW dog water station. 🐾💧

The water station relies on dog walkers topping it up for the next thirsty pooch, so if you're passing by with a little water to spare, feel free to pay it forward!!

There's a lot that goes into turning an idea into something useful. 🔨

Tools and volunteer hours are a big part of it, but so are the materials that allow our Workshop crew to actually get building.

We're incredibly fortunate to have the support of local businesses like whose ongoing support helps us get materials into the hands of our volunteers and turn ideas into real projects for our community.

From projects for local schools and preschools to community organisations and everything in between.

Our next Sewing Basics course starts 6th October and is designed for absolute beginners, as well as anyone wanting to build a bit more confidence with the basics.

You'll learn your way around a sewing machine, develop practical sewing techniques and start putting those new skills to use – all with guidance along the way.

No need to arrive knowing what you're doing. 🙌

A little project for Wānaka's four-legged locals. 🐕💧🔨

When the dog watering station on Mount Iron was destroyed (I know right..??!), our workshop crew decided they could whip something up to help.

The idea behind the original station was simple – a bowl and water bottle where walkers and runners could leave any spare water for thirsty dogs.

So our volunteers have more planned for popular dog-walking spots around here. Let us know if you have some fave spots in need!

Been wanting to learn your way around the Wood Workshop? 🔨

Our next Introduction to Woodwork classes are now open for bookings, with BOTH Tuesday and Wednesday evening options available in October.

This four-week course is designed for beginners and is all about getting hands-on, building confidence with power tools and timber, and learning practical skills you can take into your own projects.

No experience needed – that's what the class is for!

Got a project sitting on the “I’ll get around to it one day” list? 👀🔨

WCW isn't just about our community projects and classes.

Members can use our workshop sessions to get stuck into their own projects, with access to shared workspace, tools and equipment.. whether you're building something new, repairing something old or finally tackling an idea you've had sitting around for a while.

New to some of the equipment? That's okay too. Everyone starts with an induction, with tool training completed before using the relevant machinery.
