Hokinga Mahara Tuesdays 🍃

This week’s throwback takes us back to 1924 featuring Arimawha Hall, also known as Te Poho o Amiria.

Amiria Te Hemoahiahi was the wife of Kapene, but there’s still so much we don’t know about her like where she came from, her story, and what happened to her.

One kōrero we’ve been told is that Amiria was captured by Waikato warriors while travelling and taken across the country.

Does anyone know more about Amiria or this kōrero?👀

Share what you know in the comments and let’s uncover and preserve her story together 💚

🌿 Hokinga Mahara Tuesdays

Arimawha was more than a marae, it was a Pā.

An article by Whakamoe Waiau, published in Te Matuhi on 1 July 1905, records our tīpuna receiving a tono from Rāmoto to host prominent Kahungunu rangatira Niniwa-i-te-Rangi Heremaia of Wairarapa, daughter of Heremaia Tamaihotua.

Over 5 days, our tīpuna hosted around 600 manuhiri!

Imagine the manaakitanga, the kōrero and the whanaungatanga that would have filled Arimawha. 🔥

**What stories have you heard about our Pā?**

*Hokinga Mahara Tuesdays*
A glimpse into our past.

This 1901 edition of Puke ki Hikurangi contains an early published reference to Arimawha, offering another valuable thread in the historical record of our marae and community. These newspaper notices remind us that Arimawha was already part of the written landscape more than 120 years ago, preserving names, whakapapa, and connections that continue to resonate today. This article also features names that connect directly to the Kapene whānau, including the notable brothers Ruihi, Te Urumingi, and Te Arani.
