Dawn hikoi to mark cyclone anniversary
A dawn hikoi to mark the first anniversary of Cyclone Gabrielle was held this morning.
As the sun rose, Wairoa whānau came together to acknowledge the anniversary and reflect on the past year.
The journey of remembrance began with a gathering outside the A and P Showgrounds, where the flooded river breached. The group wove their way through North Clyde, where the flooded waters engulfed the land a year ago, collecting walkers along the way and finishing at the War Memorial Park/Tapuae Grounds for a Civic Service and breakfast.
Around 250 people joined the hikoi, reflecting on the past year, the progress made, and the challenges still ahead.
Activities continue today with a Mokopuna Day and a whānau concert this evening, both at War Memorial Park/Tapuae Grounds.

Kia ora tātau ♥️ We Wairoa are hosting this anniversary event this Wednesday. Cyclone Gabrielle one year ago on this day devastated our community.

It is a time to reflect, to remember and to continue to grieve a past that we will never get back, but also to mark the milestone on our recovery journey.

As one who feels, sees and hears about the struggle of our community as a collective an individual whānau daily trying to rebuild we maintain the vision hope, it is hard & frustrating that we have so many more challenges to navigate and it takes so much longer that any of us could have imagined.

Most of our whānau with insurance are in limbo waiting for the Categories to change so they can start their rebuild while others feel uncertain they will even be able to rebuild.

We invite you to come along to be together on this day. No celebration just to allow us to be still and allow the tides of time to help pull us into the next phase.

We will recover and will heal from this trauma. This one day allow yourself to rest your weary soul and be comforted.

At 12 noon there is a one minute silence to remember those across our rohe that lost their lives in the tragic events of Feb 14th 2023.

Let us look to how far we have come. There are some wins it is just so hard to see them when we still see the long road ahead.

Targeted funding has been provided to mark this day and we are very aware that not everyone will want to participate and that is ok. Do whatever you need to do.

We do know there are many do want to participate. Currently we have 941 tamariki registered for the tamariki day. They deserve this too. Whānau concert will be time to relax and enjoy

As we gather amidst the echoes of a challenging year, where floods have reshaped not just our homes but our lives, we can take time to remember the true spirit of Christmas.

It's not just a season of festivity; it's a time of hope, resilience, and the warmth of connection with each other.

While our surroundings may have changed, the aroha that bind us remain unshaken. This Christmas, let's cherish the moments spent with family and friends, finding joy in the simple act of being together.

The strength of our community shines brightest when we support each other.

Our journey towards recovery continues, but today, let's pause to appreciate the priceless gift of each other's presence. Merry Christmas and a hopeful New Year!
