If you’re away from home or waiting around for a long time, having something familiar or fun can make things a little easier — especially for tamariki.

💰 PREP ON A BUDGET: This one could cost absolutely nothing!

A ball, book, pack of cards, favourite toy, colouring supplies or a small game you already own can all help keep the crew occupied.

Pack whatever works for your whānau. ❤️

🩹 A PLASTER AND A PLAN GO A LONG WAY.

Cuts, scrapes and headaches don’t take a day off just because there’s an emergency.

A first aid kit belongs in your Grab Bag, along with any medicines you rely on and information about your prescriptions.

💰 PREP ON A BUDGET: Check what you already have before buying a brand-new first aid kit. You might already have plasters, bandages and other basics at home. Build your supplies gradually and remember to check expiry dates.

For regular medicines, think about what you would need if you had to leave home unexpectedly.

Our furry, feathered and other assorted mates need an emergency plan too!

Think about what your pet would need if you suddenly had to leave home — food, water, medication, a lead or carrier and anything else specific to them.

💰 PREP ON A BUDGET: Start with the things your pet already uses. You don’t need a fancy “pet emergency kit” — gradually putting aside a few everyday essentials is a great place to start.

Got pēpi or little ones in your household? Their needs belong in your emergency plan too.

Think nappies, wipes, food, bottles, medications, comfort items and the everyday things they rely on.

💰 PREP ON A BUDGET: Your emergency supplies don’t need to appear overnight. Start with what you already have and gradually add extras when you can. Remember to rotate anything your little one will grow out of!

No power can mean getting a little creative at dinner time.

Having a safe way to cook food can be useful during a longer power outage — and knowing what resources your neighbours have can help too.

💰 PREP ON A BUDGET: You don’t necessarily need to rush out and buy everything yourself. Talk to your neighbours about what you already have between you and what you could safely share in an emergency.

Phones are handy — but during an emergency, power and communication networks may not be.

A radio and a portable phone charger can help you stay connected and informed.

💰 PREP ON A BUDGET: Raid the junk drawer before you raid the shops! You might already have spare charging cables or a working power bank hiding at home.

Older working battery radios can also be picked up second-hand. It doesn't have to be flash — it just has to work!

An emergency is definitely not the time to discover everyone is hangry. 😂

Pack some easy-to-carry, long-lasting food in your Grab Bag.

💰 PREP ON A BUDGET: You don't have to fill your emergency supplies in one giant grocery shop. Add one extra long-life item to your normal shop when the budget allows.

Keep an eye out for specials and remember to eat and replace your emergency food before it expires — no wasted kai!
