RDA provides interaction with horses to improve health and wellbeing outcomes for people experiencing disability, or who have specific challenges or needs, enabling them to have meaningful participation in, and contribution to, their community.

As many of you are aware, getting volunteers is an ongoing mission. We are not the only group struggling to recruit and maintain volunteers.

Due to this, and for the safety of all involved in HVRDA, we have made the very tough decision to change the format of our program. Individual clients will now attend for one term then have a term off. We are also changing from four clients to three for each session.

Although we are proud to have such a fantastic reputation, this means our waiting list is extensive, and it is only fair that everyone has the opportunity to participate in the program.

The new format will enable me to reduce the waiting list.

So thank you to everyone for their understanding of our change of circumstances. The health and safety of everyone involved in HVRDA is always forefront in our minds.

After a hard day’s work

Over the last holidays we were super lucky to have the team from C&M Transport doing a heap of groundwork, gateways, tidying up the yard area and lots of other small jobs that needed doing to make sure everyone can move safely around the property in winter.

A huge thank you also to Craig and the team at Linked Earthworks, who generously donated the millings for the laneways, gateways and working areas throughout the yards — and to Winstone Aggregates NZ, who donated 80 tonnes of basecourse to make it all possible.

Special Bowl — Michael Kananghinis 🏆

This award is given to a rider or volunteer for something truly special that has happened over the course of the year. This year it goes to Michael, who rides every Monday and has achieved something that means so much to us — overcoming his fear and holding his own reins. On top of that, Michael has faced numerous horse changes throughout the year and has coped and adapted every single time. We are extremely proud of you Michael! 🎖️🌈✨

Volunteer Shield — Michelle Mudgway 🏆

This award recognises a volunteer who goes above and beyond — whether through exceptional attendance, taking on extra duties, or doing something truly special for our group. This year it goes to Michelle, who volunteers every Monday without fail. She is present, consistent, and just gets the job done — but what really sets Michelle apart is the way she takes every new volunteer under her wing and guides them through their first rides until they find their feet. An absolute cornerstone of our team — thank you Michelle! 🌟💛🙌

Most Improved Rider — Cooper Thomson 🏆

This award recognises a rider who has made real strides forward over the year — whether in riding skill, attendance, or simply getting on a horse. This year it goes to Cooper, who has been riding with us for a year and has come so far! He is now riding for half or more of his sessions off the lead, steering his horse and nailing those left and right turns. Keep it up Cooper — we are so proud of your progress!

Rider of the Year — Xavier Carter 🏆

This award celebrates a rider who has achieved so much through riding — whether that's mastering new skills, riding independently, or showing real improvement over time. This year it goes to Xavier, who rides every Friday and has had three different horses throughout 2025, adapting to each change with a fantastic attitude. Xavier started the year riding with a more advanced group and has worked so hard that he's now right there with them. What a year Xavier — we couldn't be prouder!

Courage & Determination — Susan Mudge 🏆

This award recognises a rider who shows true courage and determination in working towards their goals — whether that's sitting on a horse for the first time or building on every single ride. This year it goes to Susan, who rides every Wednesday and has worked incredibly hard to overcome her fears and fully embrace the programme. We are so proud of you Susan! 🐴
