NEMA have assessed that the risk from the third Coronal Mass Ejection (burst of energy from the Sun) in the current sequence, the risk has decreased substantially.

We continue to monitor with international and domestic experts.
While this event wasn’t damaging, we are in a ‘solar maximum’ (a period of high solar activity) that started in October 2024 and increased solar activity is expected over the next few years.

Space Weather activity can cause severe damage to New Zealand’s infrastructure, particularly the national electricity grid with flow-on effects to power dependent services such as cell phone and internet services.

MARLBOROUGH EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT FINAL WIND EVENT UPDATE FOR TODAY - Thursday 23 October 4.30PM

After a day of wild weather and power outages across the province, the worst of the wind is now easing.

The Metservice Strong Wind Warning - Red remains in place until 5pm for Marlborough from Cape Campbell south and a Strong Wind Warning – Orange for the rest of Marlborough.

Marlborough Emergency Management Controller Richard McNamara said the region had come through the weather event well despite some impacts around the region.

“The immediate danger appears to have passed, but people should still remain vigilant, particularly around powerlines down and possible road damage. There are fallen trees and powerlines down on Anakiwa Road, near Queen Charlotte Drive. This is a timely reminder to please continue to treat all power lines as live at all times.

“Contractors won’t be back on site at Anakiwa until 8am tomorrow morning due to the current weather conditions,” Mr McNamara said.

Around 102 properties in the Awatere Valley could be without power overnight and 432 properties across the Marlborough Sounds are still without power too.

“Crews from Marlborough Lines and Transpower have worked hard throughout the day to restore the network and continue to do so – I’d like to thank everyone involved in this effort. Thank you again to Metservice for the accurate forecasting which helped us to prepare our people for this extreme event.”

State Highway 1 north of Kaikoura was closed briefly this afternoon and is now open.

Shipping operations in Picton Harbour for large vessels were also suspended briefly but are now back to normal.

The Emergency Coordination Centre is now standing down.
