The Filipino community in Belgium gathered today, 30 November, to commemorate Andres Bonifacio Day and to stand in solidarity with the anti-corruption protests in the Philippines. Organised by the Filipino Chaplaincy in Brussels together with Filipino Students in Leuven, 1Sambayan Belgium, Duterte Panagutin Belgium and Ugnayang Pilipino sa Belgium, paring Bert opened the programme by quoting Pope Francis’ reminder that “good Catholics meddle in politics.” With over 50 participants present, he led a discussion on the duty of the Church and the faithful to take part in the struggle for genuine social change. The event was followed by a meeting with leading Filipino organisations across Belgium, all working to build a strong and united alliance against corruption, committed to good governance, human rights and social justice for the Filipino people.

This period marks a critical opportunity for the Filipino people's continuing struggles for justice and accountability. Duterte's maneuvering to escape accountability for his crimes against humanity underscores the urgency of sustained domestic and international pressure to ensure that the victims and their families see justice served. - Duterte Panagutin Europe

Makialam at makielam!

On 23 September, former president Rodrigo Duterte will face the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague. This session is called a confirmation of charges hearing. Here, the judges will weigh if the prosecutor has enough evidence and grounds to push the case forward to a full trial.

Duterte has been detained at the ICC since March 2025. On 14 March, he already appeared before the court for the pre-trial, where the ICC first determined if it had jurisdiction over his case and the court confirmed that it does.

Read the Duterte Panagutin Network – Belgium primer to learn more about the facts of Duterte’s case, especially regarding the so-called War on Drugs, where an estimated 30,000 people were killed.

From 21 to 23 September, there will be a week of protest actions in The Hague. Message us if you are interested in joining.

We are only beginning to uncover the truth, accountability and justice for the victims of the mass and merciless killings of Filipinos under Duterte’s rule. We will not stop until he is held to account together with his cronies, his enablers, his henchmen and every trigger pulled in his name. It is us, the people, who will decide to fight and make sure Duterte ends up behind bars.

Don’t stay silent, rise up! Be part of the protests and conversations!
