Ngahere Korowai

Ngahere Korowai Imagine a thriving cloak of Native trees, manu and insects around the bare hills of Porirua.

Ngahere Korowai grows the leadership of our Porirua East community to take care of our ngahere, our water, our harbour. In 50 years, everyone in our community will be living in connection with te taiao – able to gather our kai, our rongoā, and leaving a legacy of kaitiakitanga for our mokopuna to continue, ake, ake, ake

🌿 Our Ngahere Korowai Collective is growing - in people and in purpose! 🌿

Over the last few years we've been bringing our Porirua East community together to learn and connect with te taiao. Last week's hui, in partnership with Te Uru Rākau - NZ Forestry Service, focussed on the kaupapa of 'how to grow a forest'.

Our speakers shared about how landscapes evolve from bare ground to mature forests, and how biodiversity corridors can be created through community action.

We planned for 15-20 people...but had over 45 come through the door. More chairs were needed, more kai had to be fetched, and a room full of energy from across Porirua and the wider region.

We closed with a beautiful kōrero from Pania Solomon from Ngāti Toa, who grounded us in what this whenua meant to those that have been before us, and our responsibility for future generations.

The feedback has been amazing - there has been an overall sense of people feeling inspired by what happens when community lead the way.

🌿 Toitū te ngahere, toitū te whenua, toitū te tangata 🌿

Ngahere Korowai Collective Hui 🌿

We're heading into winter and thought we'd do something a little different for this collective hui. We've teamed up with Te Uru Rakau NZ Forestry Service, to bring a workshop focussed on the future of our native forests - how they grow, regenerate, and shape our whenua over the coming decades. 🌱

This hui is FREE and open to our wider community, so please share with anyone who cares about our ngahere, kaitiakitanga and restoring native ecosystems!

We can't wait to catch-up with some of you, and meet some more of you!

It might’ve seemed a bit quiet from us lately… but there’s been a lot happening 🌿

We’ve taken time to reflect, farewell the amazing Shelby, and begin planning for what’s next.

With 3 years of funding now secured and a range of upcoming events, we’re excited for what’s ahead — and to keep growing connection with our community and te taiao.

Another 800 plants added to the future forest.

Thank you to everyone who showed up with lots of energy on the day, and to Porirua City Council and Friends of Maara Roa for the plants that have gone into the reserve. We can’t wait to watch this little forest grow.

We also saw hundred of kowhai seeds and seedling tucked into the soil and bank, slowly doing their thing.

For some, it was their first ever planting . Awesome to see more people join the mahi and connect in with this space

Some feedback from locals:

"It meant a lot to bring my son and mokos because when they come back to wellington they can tell their children - I planted here"

"helping the future by acting now" 🌿🪏
