WHAT A FANTASTIC EFFORT Kiwi have returned to the hills surrounding Wellington in Aotearoa / New Zealand for the first time in 150 years through a project involving iwi, community members and landowners. More than 250 manu, the Māori word for birds, have been translocated to the region through the Capital Kiwi Project, following years of predator control, relationship building and community education.

Rāwiri Walsh, (Taranaki Whānui ki Te Upoko o Te Ika, Ngā Rauru Kītahi, Ngāti Raukawa ki te Tonga and Te Āti Haunui-a-Pāpārangi), is the project's Kaimanaaki Kiwi, or kiwi guardian and iwi liaison.

He karere ki ngā uri o Te Ātiawa me Taranaki Whānui

Decisions have consequences. Minister Chris Bishop has chosen to retain the heritage protection on the former GHQ building on Section 90 at Pukeahu.

If that decision makes exercising the mana whenua right of refusal commercially unviable, another opportunity to reconnect Te Ātiawa-Taranaki Whānui with whenua in central Wellington could be lost.

There are thousands of Te Ātiawa and Taranaki Whānui uri across Te Awakairangi. Many uri are on the general roll. I hope our whānau remember this decision. And I hope they ask who stood up for mana whenua aspirations and take that understanding with them when they make their own choice at the ballot box.
