A huge shoutout to Jade and the Rat Trapping Team! 👏🌱

Their hard work and dedication have led to the creation and maintenance of multiple traps, helping protect our local native wildlife and contribute to a healthier environment. From planning and building to checking and maintaining traps, this group has shown incredible commitment throughout the year.

Thank you for making a real difference in our community, one trap at a time! 🐦💚

We had a busy session this week adding nutrients back into the soil with our in-house compost (thank you Food Tech and Hospitality!!). The soil has been really dry lately with all the sunshine we've had - we're hoping we can return it to good health before planting some new seedlings. If you are keen to join us next time, email [email protected]

Today our Manukura and student leaders, alongside some amazing Year 7 & 8 students, spent the day helping restore and improve areas around Orewa College to see so many students getting involved, working hard, and making a real difference in our community.

A massive thank you to Bunnings Warehouse for sponsoring and supporting this project, and to all the incredible students and teachers who came along to help out. Days like this show what can happen when people work together for the environment

Inspiring Mahi from our Envirogroup!

A massive thank you and ngā mihi nui to the 56 incredible students, spanning from Year 7 all the way to Year 13, who rolled up their sleeves today to restore our local environment. In a fantastic collaborative effort down at the estuary, with the support of Restore Hibiscus and Bays we began to plant an impressive 406 native plants! This vital eco-project was made possible through the generous donation of the plants by Glasgow Contractors.

Our students planted a beautiful variety of native flora, including oioi, pukio, karamu, tī kōuka, kānuka, mānuka, red matipo, harakeke, karo, and H**e stricta (Veronica stricta). These species will play a crucial role in stabilising the shoreline, filtering runoff, and creating a thriving habitat for local wildlife. It was wonderful to see our senior and junior students working side-by-side, demonstrating genuine leadership and stewardship (kaitiakitanga) for our community. Exceptional work, team!

MEMBER OF THE MONTH — MAY

This month, we’re so excited to recognise Kelly Derbyshire-Smith as our very first Member of the Month! 💚

Kelly has continuously shown up for our group, always willing to help others without expecting anything in return. From workshops and events to the Rangatahi Regeneration Conference, helping out at Orewa Beach, and supporting local primary schools, she has been involved everywhere she can.

Her positivity, leadership, support, and dedication to our kaupapa have not gone unnoticed, and we are so grateful to have her as part of our team.

Thank you, Kelly, for everything you do for our group and community, we appreciate you so much! 👏🌿

This week at Enviro Action Session, students got stuck into weeding, planting seeds, and preparing new boards for our upcoming tukutuku panels 🌱

Our food garden is about so much more than just growing plants. It’s helping build food security and food sovereignty within our school community while teaching practical skills that students can carry with them for life. From learning how to grow food sustainably to understanding where our food comes from, these sessions are creating hands-on opportunities for connection, learning, and care for our environment.

Awesome mahi from everyone involved 🙌

Massive shout out to Kelly and Amelie for putting in the mahi at the Orewa Beach School working bee this morning! With the support of and the community, they helped build 12 garden beds for the DREAMS Hub (Design, Robotics, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics, and Science), a innovative space that's all about fostering student creativity. We are making great progress on our native restoration site. All our weeding and mulching is really starting to pay off. Our babies are getting so big! 🥲😂.

In week 5 we have a whole load of plants getting delivered that we can start putting in the ground! A big shout out to .nz for making this happen! We are so excited to see this site extended all the way down to the bridge 💚.

👉 If you want to get involved with this project, email Holly Smart and she can add you to our native planting chat group.

Thanks for the cool pics!
