✅New Year.✅ New Goals. ✅New Confidence.

Confidence is not something we are born with.

It's something we build💪 - step by step, choice by choice, moment by moment.

This year, don't wait to "feel ready".👋

✅Start where you are. ✅Try. ✅Learn. ✅Practice.✅ Grow.

Every small action strengthens🌟 your belief in yourself.
Every brave step turns doubt into confidence.💥

✅Set goals that stretch you.
✅Trust the process
✅Become the person you are working toward.

This is your 🩷year to build what you once thought you lacked.

You've got this.👏

What are you doing at 7.30pm tonight? Why not set up your new year resolutions by finding out how Toastmasters works? It's our last meeting of 2025 and we welcome guests along. It's no obligation and we have Xmas cake and other treats for supper!

At our last meeting we learned how a note of currency can engender multiple speech ideas. It was amazing and inspirational.

Tonight we'll analyse why we are Toastmasters which will help us and help first timers see the potential in becoming a Toastmaster.

You are very welcome to join us! Be a few minutes early, we meet in "downtown" Ōrewa at St Andrews Presbyterian Church, 107 Centerway Road, Orewa...that's almost at the intersection with Florence Ave.

Have fun and have a think about how Toastmasters might be the best new year's resolution ever!

Um, How Do I Stop, Ya Know, Using Um and Ah?🫢

Use the science of disfluencies and techniques to clean up your speech.😊

Never heard that term before⁉️

Sooooo, um, disfluency is, like, an academic term, ah, that is used to describe speaker he-he-hesitations, repeats, repeats, or expressions such as um, ah or ya know.

In Toastmasters this is the primary purview of the Ah-Counter (which is a much catchier title than disfluency-counter, don’t you think?).

If you’ve ever been singled out by the Ah-Counter, it might help to know that our spontaneous speech is naturally disfluent—as natural as peas in a pod. 🥰

In fact, a conservative estimate for the rate of vocalized disfluencies is six words per 100. That means if you speak at a typical rate of 150 words per minute, you should expect to say nine filler words in just one minute of speech! And it often gets worse when we are nervous or the subject is difficult or demands effort (in speaking and listening).

So then why, as Toastmasters, should we be concerned with our expressions of hesitation?

In short, these verbal viruses become 👉credibility killers.

That’s why it’s important to learn how to reduce them but perhaps not entirely eliminate them.

So, Um, Can I, Like, Get Rid of Them?
