Fantastic news! Kākā have returned to Churchill Park and surrounding Glendowie properties for the third year in a row. Watch out for these curious, fruit‑loving parrots in your backyard. Thanks to Brett for spotting this one and sharing the photo.

The Ōrākei Enviro Forum, held at the Akarana Marine Sports Centre, brought the community together for an inspiring day celebrating local environmental action. Set right on the edge of the Waitematā, the event showcased the mahi of conservation groups, innovators, and volunteers who are restoring ecosystems across the Ōrākei area. Attendees explored interactive displays, enjoyed virtual reality journeys through native habitats, and connected with experts working from the ridgelines to the sea. Grounded in mana whenua perspectives and strengthened by genuine community passion, the forum highlighted both the challenges and the progress in caring for our whenua and moana. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended — your presence, enthusiasm, and support made the day truly special. A special thanks to Local Board Member Margaret Voyce for her dedicated environmental care and action, and to the Ōrākei Local Board for allowing this wonderful event to continue.

Kudos to Roger from Sayegh St in St Heliers for sharing a heartwarming video of a kererū enjoying nikau berries in his backyard, a testament to the power of dedication, as his efforts to trap over 80 rats have created a haven for native wildlife.

Beautiful day for checking traps on Maungarei.
