🚫 Two-Year Pāua Closure - Tauroa Peninsula 🚫

Following consultation, the Minister for Oceans and Fisheries has imposed a temporary pāua closure at Tauroa Peninsula, Ahipara, Northland. The closure will be in effect from 15 October 2026 to 14 October 2028.

The closure area starts at the mean high-water mark near Te Huahua/Iron Gate on Tauroa Peninsula, extends 2 kilometres offshore, and then follows the coastline to a point near the Hunahuna Stream. The closure area covers approximately 32.4 square kilometres of fisheries waters.

The closure area excludes approximately 1.8 square kilometres of fisheries waters at the sandy beach near Hukatere Stream. This area was identified by Ahipara hapū and whānau during the development of the closure area and does not contain reef or pāua habitat.

📣 Half-Price Callsigns for Far North Boaties: Limited Availability 📣

Following Coastguard New Zealand's recent visits to Far North boating clubs, they're offering a limited number of half-price callsigns to our members - just $30 instead of the usual $60.

A callsign makes it easier to log a trip with Coastguard, and has big benefits if you get in trouble on the water, so this is a great opportunity get one if you haven't already.

A callsign is a unique identifier for your boat and its radio gear - think of it like your car licence plate. It means that if you ever need Coastguard, they can identify your vessel quickly, rather than trying to work out which boat with that name they're talking to.

If you've already got a callsign, great, you're already set up to be found quickly if you ever need them. If you don't, now's a good time, there are 500 call signs available at this price, and once they’re gone the offer closes.

We now have a confirmed reschedule date for our AGM and Prizegiving - Saturday 17 October, same time same place (6pm at the Golf Club in Ahipara).

AGM will commence at 6pm, followed by dinner and prizegiving, so please be there early to grab a drink and get comfortable. Our AGMs seldom take long to run through, and we appreciate your presence to vote for those standing for committee and matters of importance to our club.

On that note - if you’re keen to stand for committee, we welcome nominations (yes you can nominate yourself), and you can also raise any matters you’d like to be discussed at the AGM using the nomination form:

It's been 10 years since we lost our much-loved member, Dave Stewart, known fondly as 'Fingers' to many. Marion is marking the occasion by inviting those who knew Fingers around to come and "have a warm Lion Red" in his memory. 🍻

The numbers are in!

Ahipara Gamefish Club members recorded 40 billfish during the 2025/26 season:

🐟 36 striped marlin
⚫ 1 black marlin
⚔️ 3 broadbill swordfish

Of those 40 billfish, 23 were tagged and released and 17 were weighed - a 57.5% tag-and-release rate.

Out of the 36 striped marlin caught by our members, 21 fish were tagged and released, and 15 weighed - five of those were under the club’s 90kg minimum weight. 😬

We know us West Coasters like to eat 😄 but with marlin under 90kg not eligible for club trophies or prizes, remember you can always chuck a tag in it and go get a bigger one!

Overall though, a huge well done to everyone who caught a billfish this year, and a release rate of over 50% is a great result and something we can be proud of. Bring on 2026/27!

What an epic day we had to celebrate the one and only Annette Hall of Far North Radio!

A small group took Annette up to the repeater that has been her link to the west coast for the last 25 years - but one she’s never visited in person before. It was an adventure she won’t forget in a hurry, and a special way for us to say thank you to Annette for her tireless efforts and commitment to us fishos over the years.

We then returned to Foreshore Road where we presented Annette with a few more tokens of our thanks, and enjoyed a beautiful dinner cheers to our host Rob, and special guest Grant McCallum who generously contributed to our kai.

Annette - you’ve left some pretty big shoes to fill, but there’s no question that you absolutely deserve your retirement - so from all of us at Ahipara Gamefish Club, thank you so much - Far North clear!!!

Congratulations on a spectacular day! Catching a blue is always rewarding, but 2 from 4 is even better! We can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings!
