Sunflower planting time - Now that Spring is here!
A must for a child's garden.
Plant just one or two, since they take a lot of room. Sunflowers will sprout in 1 week, become a small seedling in 2 weeks, and should be 60cm tall in a month. In 8 weeks, the buds will flower revealing hundreds of seed kernels. Grow 'confectionery' sunflowers, the type grown for food. They will dry naturally in the late summer sun; the seeds, rich in protein and iron, can be roasted for snacks.
Save a few for next summers' planting.

Anyone need a worm farm?
Grubby, but empty.
$10 at the community garden, or pop into the Garage Sale and hopefully someone there can assist!

Kids in the garden have been making prints with flowers by simply pressing (bashing) them inbetween the folded fabric.
Rather than guessing the plants, they've told me there are pressings of:
Blue Borrage
Calendula
Holly hocks
Geranium
Pineapple sage
Cosmos
Daisys
Simple exploritory nature play that is creative and gets them familiar with the plants around them.
Join us in the garden next week for more fun activities for the kids... who knows what they'll come up with.

For those that come in and assist with the garden you can get a sweet reward for your labour.
Every week we set up a shared lunch with a delicious soup from Glynn, fresh baked bread, freshly made butter, greens from the garden and a dessert made with seasonal fruit. All that and scintillating company too.
Fabulous views provided by Whakaraupo harbour.
Volunteer between 10am - 12:30pm any Wednesday at the Community Gardens. Just pop on in!
