LET'S HAVE A CONVERSATION - RECREATION, SPORT AND PLAY
Hutt City Council invite you to have a conversation about sport, recreation and play in Lower Hutt, and the future challenges and opportunities facing both the community and Council. We know sport, recreation and play are highly valued by our community, and that’s why every year significant rates funding goes into providing fields, hard surfaces and facilities. At the same time, we know the sports community is under pressure from increasing costs, decreasing funding and in some cases, low or declining participation.

HCC are running a series of community hui, and inviting anyone with an interest in keeping our community active to come along for a kōrero.

Monday 18 May, Pelorus Sports House 6pm-7:30pm
Monday 25 May, Wainuiomata Neighbourhood Hub 6pm-7:30pm
Thursday 28 May, Walter Nash Centre. 6pm-7:30pm

WAI TUKU IHO - Enduring partnerships and place
Wednesday 29 April was a significant day in Te Whanganui a Tara and our Ahu Whenua Trusts, as we acknowledged the signing of Te Tiriti o Waitangi (Te Tiriti) ki Te Whanganui a Tara.

As Aotearoa New Zealand’s founding document, representing a partnership between Māori and the Crown, it takes its name from Waitangi in Te Pēwhairangi (the Bay of Islands), where it was first signed on 6 February 1840. More than 500 rangatira (chiefs) signed the Treaty across the country. Here in Te Whanganui a Tara, Te Tiriti was signed by 34 rangatira on 29 April 1840, after ten days of discussion onboard the schooner Ariel.

Today, Te Tiriti remains the foundation for the relationship between Māori and the Crown. For iwi, this means an ongoing expectation of genuine partnership — where Māori voices are heard, tino rangatiratanga (self-determination) is respected, rights are upheld, and decisions are made together in good faith.

Anzac Day 2026: Recognising all who have served, past and present
Our thanks to Jenni Dittmer, Wellington Tenths Trustee representing our Ahu Whenua Trusts at the service this year at Cenotaph at Pipitea. "More than a century on from Gallipoli, the legacy of Anzac continues to evolve. It challenges us to reflect not only on the sacrifice of those who served, but also on the responsibilities we carry in our own time. To be a nation that remembers is to be a nation that strives for understanding, for compassion, and for peace."Our thanks to Rowan Cotterill our whanaunga Rowan Cotterill - Love Stomp Floral Design based on the Kapiti Coast - E| lovestomp.co.nz

I recently met with the Wellington Tenths Trust to discuss the Draft Annual Plan, a really valuable discussion and some great feedback.

The Trust’s origins trace back to 1839, when one-tenth of land acquired by the New Zealand Company was meant to be held in trust for Māori, descendants of Taranaki hapū including Te Ātiawa, Ngāti Tama, Ngāti Ruanui and Taranaki iwi who had settled across Te Whanganui-a-Tara and the Hutt Valley.

Today, the Trust represents over 7,000 descendants and continues to manage whenua across the region, reflecting resilience, stewardship, and a strong connection to place.

Ngā mihi to the Trustees for sharing their time and insights, and for the important role they continue to play in our region.
