donate.hivepass.app/hanmermtb Formed in 2004 this non-profit club was set up by local enthusiasts to promote mountain biking in Hanmer Springs through the construction of new mountain bike trails. The Club has an excellent relationship with Matariki Forests who own the forest. It has a specific License and Permit, which allow the Club to undertake the
trail building work. Without the support and co-operation of Matariki Forests the trail network would not be as extensive as it is today. Single track riding is what mountain bikers value the most and Hanmer now boasts some of the best in the New Zealand. There are trails here for all levels of experience and they link together to create a great network of rides. For the more adventurous there are now opportunities in the St James Conservation Area for mountain biking and Hanmer provides a great base for exploring this area. Having trails in a commercial forest means that from time to time tracks will disappear as the forest is harvested. Trails are generally reinstated once the logging is completed. This, together with the new trails currently being developed means the trail network is continually expanding.

Here's another fantastic way to support our club - come watch some epic bike films with us!

Martys Entertainment Hanmer is hosting a special screening of The Big Bike Film Night later this month, and is generously giving all the proceeds to our little bike club! Some of us were lucky to see the films at other screenings earlier this year and will be there to see them again, they are that good. It's got to be the best film festival doing the rounds if you're into biking...

Timberlands - sponsored by PJ's Pies Hanmer Springs

Timberlands trail is a solid uphill only climbing trail that's just the right gradient to feel like you've earned the view from the top! And maybe a pie when you get back to town πŸ˜‰ There's a bench seat up there too in case you need a minute or five to really soak in the vista. It's been through a couple of iterations over the years, having been rebuilt in 2023 after the area was logged. Feedback is that it's a better trail now, what do you reckon?

It's worth pointing out that Timberlands is a dual use walking and biking trail, part of the popular Dog Stream/Timberlands Circuit. While it's not likely you'll run people over while puffing uphill, please do warn walkers that you're coming and allow plenty of space as you pass them.

From the top of Timberlands intermediate riders can go onto Two Timer, and advanced riders can tackle Red Rock or Joliffe Saddle Track.

Were you at the Merrell Spring Challenge race over the weekend? Some of our club supporters volunteered on the crew building this massive marquee (and packing it back down) in exchange for a donation from Spring Challenge to our club πŸ₯°

The funds raised from these events are so valuable to help us with the running costs of the club. There are many ways to volunteer and support your favourite little MTB club so get in touch if you're keen to give back and get some good karma points! And no, not every task is as physical as this one...

Mach 1 - sponsored by Harcourts Hanmer Springs

Did you know Mach 1 is a climbing trail too? It is an XC (cross country) trail winding its way up and down in both directions, in and out of established stands of pine and larch trees. It gains about 50m in elevation from south to north - starting from Larches Carpark it is predominantly downhill and from the southern entry point opposite Camp Track it is a mostly uphill ride. The majority of bikers ride it downhill, but being a two way trail it provides a good climbing alternative to Dog Stream for the intermediate and advanced riders. In the downhill direction it provides an excellent introduction for beginner riders looking to make the step up to intermediate trails.

Heading north along Mach 1 gives you access to Big Foot, Fir Trail, Dog Stream and Detox (when it reopens soon). Riding south on Mach 1 takes you to Camp Track for a quick way back to Jollies Pass Trail Hub and Western Link, or you can have a play on Helix and Base Camp.
